I took part in a recent photo shoot 😄.

Why? To let all the declutterers know that there are many items that you can get out of your house and recycle for free at our local transfer stations

One of the most amazing things about my job is the communication with my clients outside of scheduled sessions. I get sent photos and updates on how they’re going with their decluttering and their renovations, and I get sent curly questions about where they can recycle or donate their belongings. But this latest update I did not expect. I received an update from a client whose pantry I had decluttered, sorted and reorganised before Christmas in December 2024.

They wrote “I did a quick pantry refresh last weekend after stuff was getting mixed up and out of hand. It was so quick and simple to declutter thanks to your organising efforts. I've given everyone a refresher on where things go and things are s**c and span again.” I’ve included their words and the video from the original job.

While I know everyone loves the comparisons of a ‘Before’ and ‘After’, the true value lies in the reduced mental load brought about by developing organising systems tailored for my clients. And to receive this feedback a year and a half after I’d decluttered and reorganised this family’s pantry made me incredibly happy – it’s why I love what I do.

If you’d like to take a peek at the full pantry transformation, you can read the story here:

Would you believe that the fact I provide a service to remove donations & recycling at the end of each in-home session is one of the most valued aspects of my service? The relief it brings to people to know that all those things are gone, and they do not have to deal with them – it is real!

So, I get it. The decluttering part is fun. It’s where we take action and take back control of our space.

But the stuff left over afterwards that needs to be recycled and donated – that bit can feel like a chore.

Unfortunately, it comes with the territory, so to combat this, when you make a plan to declutter - include in that plan time to take those things out of your home - gift them on, donate, recycle or send to landfill - to complete that whole decluttering cycle.

And when it’s all gone - put your feet up and relax – because you’ve done a great job. Xo

I think I’ve spoken before about how I started my business to help people – but found out that you then also need to become a social media guru! I love taking photos! But it does get tricky when you’re trying to include yourself in them – so I’ve done the old stack a pile of pots on top of the green bin in the garden and lean my phone against it trick. And the strap my phone to the head rest in my car with an elastic band to get a packing video. Well today I have gone high tech! Completely hands free to try and make some videos to show how I work. And where did I get my inspiration? From an artist I saw on Instagram. Looks ridiculous, but it’s absolute genius! And I get to re-use that elastic band from the car packing video 😁😂. And like I said before: it goes without saying that this post (and all my others) are marked as not made with AI! 😅

(photo credit goes to my darling husband who pi**ed himself laughing when he saw the hook of the coat hanger when I exited the room)

Hello Declutterers!

Update!
Experiment over!

Firstly, thank you all for letting me flood your feed with the same information about my accountability sessions three times over, in 3 different formats.
I was surprised by the results. The current wisdom is that short videos are needed to catch attention, and that carousels are THE format to use on Instagram. Results were a little different. The long video had the most reach on Fb & Insta. The single picture and carousel both did really well on Fb - but only the single picture did well on Insta, and the carousel tanked. I honestly thought I would have to dump the single picture for Insta, but I am really pleased this format hasn't died. The carousels - I think I'll have to try & make them more engaging to connect with my Insta audience.
I will keep bettering and bettering.
Thank you again gorgeous people 🥰

I am one of those people that grew up with this whole idea that books are precious and can’t be thrown away. But in all honesty, as I’ve gotten older my views have changed. Sad as it is, there are a lot of books in the world, and I can’t save them all! I worked with an antiques dealer who had old encyclopedias and atlases that were quite literally falling apart. They weren’t good enough to sell, so other than recycling them - my suggestion was to use the beautiful pages inside as wrapping – to wrap around items sold to protect them on their journey to their new home. I’ve done the same with superseded maps, because they’re no longer useful as a map – but they do make great wrapping paper! I love it when we can find a new life for old things.

Sometimes we need to throw out the decluttering rules! I was helping a client declutter their home office — the kind of space where work papers mix with all the bits of life that get tucked away over the years. As we sorted through the drawers, we came across records for their two pets.

Normally, decluttering advice is simple: if you don’t need it, let it go. But this was different.

I advised them not to let go, because the records were mixed together: these two pets had grown up side-by-side. One had already passed away, and the other was very old. It would have brought on unnecessary grief & anguish to sort these documents. So, I told my client to leave them for now, and to wait for the right time to let both sets of records go. Being organised isn’t about being ruthless. We need to be kind to ourselves. And to do that sometimes those decluttering rules need to be broken.

Thoughtful Spaces Decluttering offers home organising and decluttering with care and kindness. If this feels right for you, call 0413 065 282.
