I’m a professional cleaner. Filth doesn’t shock me — it’s literally my job. I’ve cleaned bathrooms in private homes that would make most people’s mothers faint.

But public toilets? I hate them. Full phobia. I’ve been known to carry my own bleach into a petrol station restroom just to cope.

This morning, at a petrol station, I genuinely died a little inside.

Before anything else: the attendant was kind, professional, and completely blameless. I showed her the photos and told her not to go in there for her own safety. No one should be exposed to this without warning.

Now — speaking as a professional cleaner — this is unacceptable.

Yes, businesses are responsible for maintaining restrooms. But there is a baseline of human behaviour that should not need to be enforced or cleaned up. This was not an accident. This was a deliberate act of filth, left for another human being to deal with.

People forget that cleaners are not faceless. Someone has to walk into that space. Someone has to breathe it in. Someone has to clean it.

And before anyone assumes this must have been a “rough area” — it wasn’t. This happened in Wahroonga, one of the North Shore’s most affluent suburbs.

Money doesn’t buy manners. And it certainly doesn’t buy respect.
