With deer hunting in full swing across the state, it’s important to remember to store fi****ms and ammunition securely and legally.

When driving through recognised deer habitat between 30 minutes after sunset until 30 minutes before sunrise, people must not to be in possession of a firearm and spotlight unless the fi****ms and ammunition are secured separately and any spotlights are not in use.

If on foot, fi****ms must be unloaded, ammunition stored in an appropriate case or container and the spotlight must not be fitted to the firearm or a fixture attached to the firearm.

Our interactive Introduction to Fi****ms online module provides tips on transporting fi****ms, firearm safety and other great shooting skill tips: https://www.gma.vic.gov.au/education/online-learning-materials

Enjoy your time in the bush and keep safe.

The Estimates of the 2025 deer harvest in Victoria report shows hunters harvested more female deer than male deer in 2025.🦌

Of the estimated 118,400 Sambar Deer harvested, 54% were female and 46% were male. Of the estimated 38,000 Fallow Deer harvested, 55% were female and 45% were male.

This suggests that many hunters are harvesting deer for the meat rather than targeting deer for trophies.

A huge thank you from all of us at Alpine Country Outdoors to everyone who signed petitions, submitted feedback, contacted MPs, and made their voices heard throughout the Victorian Fi****ms Rapid Review process.

The strength of the community response showed just how many responsible fi****ms owners, hunters, farmers, and sporting shooters care about fair and practical laws.

The good news: no broad firearm ownership cap will be introduced in Victoria.

This outcome reinforces what we’ve said all along: law-abiding fi****ms owners should not be punished for the actions of criminals.

We appreciate everyone who stood together, stayed respectful, and helped ensure our voices were heard loud and clear.
