The striking blue mutation of the Rainbow Lorikeet has been selectively developed in Australia over the past decade. By pairing this mutation with other established colour variations, breeders are producing an impressive and increasingly diverse range of colours.
Here in the Newcastle and Hunter region, these unusual lorikeets are particularly fascinating given our strong connection with the familiar wild Rainbow Lorikeet. The blue mutation offers a remarkable contrast to the traditional green, orange and yellow colouring we see locally, while still retaining the unmistakable character of this iconic Australian bird.
