Alpaca Fibre Days

Alpaca Fibre Days Most Wednesdays over summer I invite a group of up to four people to help in processing an alpaca fleece and to take some home for their own use.

Well, it’s been a while…. I’m just playing with my new fleece washing setup. Yes, the tubs are round the wrong way - I want to make sure I have all the leaks sorted before I put them in their final place. I have almost a whole fleece (Sprocket) on to soak as I test the system

Here’s a little update on what I’ve been doing in the past 2 weeks. Starting with the Romney I processed using Anne’s special technique. We then had a “Dye Laughing” day using Earth Palette cold dyes. The two lavender colours are the Romney. The next group are my alpaca fleeces over dyed with various colours. Not so successful over dark brown, but I’ll have another go. The very dark grey is Mystic, undyed and blended with a tiny bit of white silk. Very soft for an animal 10+ years old. The last two are Corriedale from the Aussie Bale Project. These were dyed last year using Landscape dyes (Heath and Lichen) .. now to find a project to use them...

Oooh err... hello folks- it’s been a while. I blame COVID-19 for my inertia. I’m just getting back into gear. Today I’m working on a sheep fleece, even though I have a shed full of alpaca. Romney or Romney X to be more precise. I’m having to overcome the ick factor of lanolin (it’s not so bad!) Tomorrow I have the opportunity to learn from an expert whose technique for scouring wool may be less conventional. We’ll be comparing her secret scouring product with my conventional one. I’m really looking forward to it. Next week I’m getting together with some buddies for a sesh I’m calling Dye Laughing - dyeing alpaca with cold water dyes. That should be fun too. I’m working my way up to more mid week processing days. Stay posted
