Recent findings from Kidsafe Victoria are a wake-up call for all of us. Their Safe Seats, Safe Kids program found that an incredible 90% of child car restraints are incorrectly fitted or used. 🚙👶
Why this matters:
When a car seat isn't installed or used correctly, the risk of life-threatening injuries in a crash can be 4 to 6 times greater.
The common mistakes Kidsafe Victoria found:
• Twisted straps: A twisted harness or tether strap can’t distribute the force of a crash evenly.
• Loose installations: If the seat can move more than an inch in any direction, it isn’t secure.
• Incorrect routing: Seatbelts or ISOFIX attachments threaded through the wrong path.
• Seatbelt & ISOFIX used together: Never use both together. In the event of an accident, the crash forces cause both to act against one another, resulting in either or both failing.
• Top tethers: Often left disconnected or attached to the wrong point (like a luggage hook instead of an anchor point).
Don't be part of the statistics. It can be surprisingly tricky to get everything "just right", and as your child grows, their needs change. A seat that was perfect six months ago might need a height adjustment or a transition to the next stage today.
