Well, it happened again. It’s Easter Saturday and while driving home from the beach with the family, I received a call from a customer who owned an Air BnB. The people staying in the Air BnB had complained about seeing cockroaches 🪳 . They’d spotted 10 or more, including in the dishwasher! So, just another reminder, that unused dishwashers retain quite a bit of water around the filter and drain in their base. Cockroaches need warmth and moisture! So that water sitting there in a sealed up chamber is the perfect place for cockroaches to breed and thrive! Then they spread to the rest of your kitchen. Don’t let your dishwasher just sit there unused! Make sure you run it at least once a week. Even though its Easter long weekend, if you need help with pests… Intuitive Pest Management is open for business and can come to your aid!

2 jobs in 2 days… same problem 🪳

Both customers reported small cockroaches running across the kitchen bench at night and early morning.

After inspecting both homes, the source was the same…

👉 Unused dishwashers.

In both cases, the dishwasher hadn’t been used in a long time—and had become the perfect breeding site for German cockroaches.

Warm. Dark. Undisturbed.
Exactly what they’re looking for.

Simple rule:
👉 If you don’t use it… lose it.
(As in—get rid of it. Otherwise you’re giving cockroaches a place to breed.)

If you are keeping it:
✔ Run it at least once a week (even empty)
✔ Keep seals and edges clean
✔ Don’t leave it sitting idle for long periods

If you’re seeing cockroaches at night, there’s usually a hidden infestation nearby—and it won’t fix itself.

Nasutitermes termites found in a tree in Cooroy this week 🐜
These guys are easy to spot with their dark heads and pointed “snouts.” While they’re not usually the most destructive species, having them close to your home is never ideal.

If you’re seeing termite activity around your property, it’s always worth getting it checked early 👍

Nasutitermes found in a tree stump in Black Mountain today.

These are one of the more evolutionarily advanced termite groups, easily recognised by their soldiers with dark heads and distinctive pointed snouts.

Unlike some other termite species, they don’t usually cause catastrophic structural damage — but that doesn’t mean they’re harmless. If they establish near your home, they can still pose a risk over time.

The key takeaway?
If you’re seeing termites anywhere around your property, it’s always worth getting it checked early.

If you’re on the Sunshine Coast and need advice or an inspection, contact a professional, insured, and QBCC-licensed pest and termite manager like Intuitive Pest Management.

🐜 Let’s Talk Termites for a Moment…

Termites are secretive little creatures that love to play hide and seek.

When inspecting a property, it’s often the place you don’t look that ends up being where they’re found later.

Homes built on piers (stumps) don’t prevent termites — but they can make their path from soil to structure more exposed and therefore more likely to be noticed during inspections.

But there’s also a downside.

Those subfloor areas often become storage zones.

Old timber.
Cardboard boxes.
Offcuts.
Building materials.

Dark.
Sometimes damp.
Poor airflow.

Storing cellulose-based materials in these conditions isn’t ideal.

When timber or cardboard sits in contact with soil and absorbs moisture, it begins to decay. That combination of moisture and cellulose can be attractive to any foraging termites that come across it.

And once they’ve found a food source under your home, the next logical step may be the structural timber above.

A clean, well-ventilated subfloor is one of the simplest ways to reduce risk.

Tiny beetles in your cupboard?

These cigarette beetles were recently found in Mooloolaba — the source was wheat bags stored in a cupboard. The larvae fed on the grains inside and even chewed through the fabric bag before emerging.

By the time the issue was discovered, the cupboard area was heavily infested.

Stored-product pests like this often begin with a single contaminated item and can spread quietly before being noticed.

If you’re seeing small brown beetles around pantry areas, it’s worth investigating early.

🐜 I see this a lot with ant problems.

People assume all ants behave the same — they don’t.

Some species chase sugars, others prefer proteins. Some have one queen, others have multiple queens and can split their colony if treated incorrectly.

That’s why ant control isn’t just about spraying what you see — it’s about knowing what species you’re dealing with first.

The right approach makes all the difference.

Had fun today with a huge yellow brown paper wasp (Ropalidia romani) nest two storeys high! It’s challenging to get to them at that height, but mission accomplished!!

Roof void inspections aren’t just about insects.

Sometimes you find things that don’t belong there at all - and catching them early can prevent bigger issues later.

This is why a thorough inspection matters.
