If you notice mould in your home, the first step is to find out what has caused it. If it's linked to inadequate ventilation or to the building structure – for example, a leak – your landlord is responsible for fixing it, and it's treated as an urgent repair.
If the mould is caused by how your home is being used - such as not using the exhaust fan, keeping it clean or allowing airflow - you may be asked to fix it yourself.
As soon as you spot mould, report it to your landlord or agent in writing. If they don't respond within 2 business days, you can apply to Rental Dispute Resolution Victoria (RDRV) to help resolve the issue.
If your landlord or agent doesn’t organise the repairs, or they aren't done properly, you can apply to VCAT for an order requiring them to do the repairs.
