At 154cm (5’ 1”) Jan Sutherland was too short to work as an airline hostess. But on sheer force of personality she was chosen for a career in the skies. After an enjoyable few years as a high profile hostess, Jan came down to earth to raise a family. By the time she was ready to enter the workforce full time, Jan was 43 years young. Howeve

r at every job interview, she felt the glare of having a use by date stamped on her forehead. She felt forty and finished. So, after numerous rejections, she started her own domestic and commercial cleaning business Dial a Wife. Jan has just celebrated over 20 years running her mini boutique empire with husband Ross. In the early days -understandably - there were a few interesting inquiries for the Dial a Wife business. On more than one occasion Jan had to say, ‘sir we only make the beds, not hop in them’

The success of the business has been Jan’s obsession with service and the meticulous selection and training of operators. “This is a people business first and foremost” she says, “we just happen to clean.”

Dial a Wife has a range of associated services, including shopping, holiday house cleanups, open for inspections, a de-clutter and balance service and also office cleaning and serviced apartments. Such is the reputation of the Dial a Wife that Jan and Ross were approached to License their winning business formula. They are currently expanding the License to people who are looking for a cooperative, profitable business. DAWN is the Acronym for DIAL A WIFE NOW…

Talking of Spring Cleaning. One of my favorite cleaning tools is a Magic Eraser. You can buy them at your local supermarket. I love that the uses are seemingly endless and that they have no odor or cleaner in them and that they are safe to use around kids and pets. Takes marks of walls in an instant! Scuff marks of floors.. and more.

• How to save you money when employing the services of a cleaner.
