Can you guess who these odd little bedrooms are for? 🤷 They’re purpose-built microbat ‘nests’ installed on the underside of a new bridge in 🦇 💚

Previous flood and fire affected timber bridges provided threatened microbat species with a network of roost sites for shelter, rest, breeding and protection from predators. Realising that the new concrete bridges provided almost no bat habitat, our creative staff got to work with a local concreting factory to produce several habitat options.

These prototype nests come complete with a waste chamber, access holes and internal curtains - fancy! Staff also have plans to trial habitat grooves in bridge decking and culvert ceilings.

We’ll monitor the structures to gauge their success and let you know how we go.
