Tis the Season… for Heat, Storms & Pest Surprises

12 “Pesty” 🎅 Facts

1. Termites love a Christmas Eve storm
Warm rain + humidity = perfect swarming conditions.
If the weather turns sticky on Christmas Eve, termite alarms often follow Christmas morning.

2. Fairy lights attract more than holiday cheer
The warmth and glow of outdoor lights draw moths, mozzies, 🪲 and even 🕷️ , including redbacks, who hide behind displays.

3. Storm season supercharges ant colonies
Moist soil after December storms makes nest-building easy. Expect coastal brown 🐜 and Argentine 🐜 to boom.

4. Summer fruit bowls invite festive ant parades
Cherries, mangoes, and stone fruit have strong sugars.

5. Mozzies🦟 hatch from leftover Christmas water
Esky puddles, kiddie pools, tinsel buckets and tree stands quietly breed mozzies. Numbers spike 10-14 days after rain.

6. Christmas beetles are fewer but still around
Habitat loss and dry soils have reduced city sightings, but the iconic 🪲 still emerge where soils stay moist.

7. BBQ prawns + ham = fly heaven
Outdoor Christmas lunches bring blowflies, vinegar flies, and March 🪰 thanks to sugary drinks, seafood shells and drink spills.

8. Meat 🐜 will “clean up” the BBQ for you
Highly active in summer, meat 🐜 can strip an exposed bone in under an hour, especially around bins and pet bowls.

9. Cockroaches celebrate the heat too
December-January is peak activity for German, American, and Australian 🪳 . Warm kitchens and late night cooking are perfect for them.

10. Real Christmas trees bring unintended guests
Moisture and organic debris can attract insects like earwigs, beetles, and ants once the tree is indoors.

11. Fireworks disorient insects on NYE
Moths, beetles, and flying pests often surge around street lights right after New Year’s Eve celebrations.

12. The 12 days of Christmas, peak breeding season
Hot, humid weather between Christmas and early January fuels rapid breeding for mosquitoes, termites, pantry moths and cockroaches.

🦟 Mozzie prevention 🦟

Over the next couple of weeks it’s going to be the perfect weather to fire up the BBQ and look to entertain in our yards as the weather becomes more entertaining.

Unfortunately though it is also the prime time for Mosquitoes 🦟 (mozzies).

This is due to to the spring time change of weather. From cold to hot with heavy rainfall to plenty of sunshine encourages plenty of vegetation to blossom.

The combination of water and shade are the perfect environment for Mozzies.

Here are some tips to help minimise your entertainment areas from 🦟 -

🦟 Don’t let stagnate water build up as this is where they lay their eggs.
Such as -
* Waddling pools (when not in use)
* Bird baths
* Roof (including verandah/sheds) - Gutters holding debrie and water
* Fill up your pot plant saucers with sand.
* Your rainwater tanks have mesh covering plumbing in/outlets.
* Stored items (car tyres, open boxes)

Also you can check your neighbors’ yards. Tell them to remove standing water to keep your neighborhood safe from mosquitoes.

If your neighbour is elderly or physically challenged, or even just out of town, offer to help!

Unfortunately though some properties provide plenty of vegetation (shade) for mozzies to breed and hide in fresh wet mulch or even long grass.

Termite management in Victoria but mainly down south is mind numbing sometimes.

I guess (selfishly) thankfully to the Builders Association in Victoria that they’ve create majority of the termite infestations in Victoria for uneducated opinions in the past.

Thankfully until recent years they used to dictate how Australian Standards were written for termite protection. But now key people from the Pest Industry are involved.

Unfortunately for home owners in major populated areas are still neglected though which I can only assume its because of financial greed by their council reps.

I’ll give you 2️⃣ examples -
1. only declared 1/2 of Fston city as termite active until early 2000s. 🤣
They literally thought either termites were stuck by the invisible border or majority of key council members lived in Fston South where termites “weren’t active”.
This 💴 corrupt thinking included the actual major building (my Dad treated for active termites it in 1999). Not long after they finally changed the new building requirements after being embarrassed and/or presented with the facts.

2. Black Rock in
Lovely area we all agree, but even though they’ve been presented with termite active data decades ago it’s still a non declared termite zone.

The images attached with this post are from a group of Termite control companies (only 8) that presented data from 2004-2010. The rest are from July 2025.

The others are a new building site in Black Rock. Thankfully this builder also cares and realises termites don’t have borders.

- New building site with no termite protection requirements but we have a Builder that cares.

If you have any concerns of a termite management plan or general pests please let me know.

🕷️🕸️

- New building site with actual termite activity/damage literally feet away from the new to be ensuite.
