The single most common structural pest mistake in American homes.

WHY IT'S A PROBLEM: A woodpile is ideal habitat — dark, sheltered, full of harborage gaps, and often in contact with soil. Stacked against a house, it provides both habitat AND a direct bridge to the structure. It also traps moisture against siding and foundation, encouraging rot and inviting wood-destroying insects.

WHO MOVES IN: Mice and rats. Snakes (following the rodents). Spiders including black widows and brown recluses in their ranges. Carpenter ants — a woodpile is a classic satellite colony site. Termites — soil contact plus wood is the exact condition they need. Wood-boring beetles. Yellowjackets and hornets. Skunks and opossums underneath.

THE CORRECT SETUP: OFF THE GROUND — on a rack, pallets, or rails. No soil contact. AWAY from the structure — 20-30 feet is commonly recommended; at minimum, not touching. COVERED ON TOP ONLY — tarping the sides traps moisture and prevents drying. Wood needs airflow. SINGLE ROW where possible, for drying and to reduce harborage. SUNNY, WINDY SPOT for seasoning.

BRINGING IT INSIDE: Bring in only what you'll burn within a day. Wood stored indoors warms up and any insects inside become active — carpenter ants, beetles, and overwintering wasps will emerge into your living space. Never spray firewood with insecticide; you will burn it and release the chemicals.

THE OTHER RULE: DON'T MOVE FIREWOOD. Transporting firewood spreads emerald ash borer, spongy moth, Asian longhorned beetle, and other invasive forest pests. Buy it where you burn it. Most states have regulations.
