Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean your pool should be “set and forget” ❄️
One of the biggest mistakes pool owners make in the cooler months is leaving their solar cover on 24/7… and it can actually do more harm than good.
Here’s why you should be removing your solar pool cover regularly in winter:
🔹 Let your pool breathe
Keeping the cover on all the time traps gases and contaminants in the water — your pool needs fresh air to stay balanced.
🔹 Prevent chemical build-up
Without proper ventilation, chemicals can become concentrated and lead to imbalances that are harder (and more expensive) to fix. This can lead to bleaching of your pool's surface and damage to your equipment
🔹 Avoid algae growth
A covered pool creates a dark, warm environment — the perfect breeding ground for algae, even in winter!
🔹 Protect your equipment
Poor water balance can put unnecessary strain on your chlorinator and equipment, potentially leading to avoidable issues.
🔹 Improve water quality
Removing the cover allows sunlight and circulation to do their job, keeping your water clearer and healthier.
💡 Top tip: Even in winter, aim to remove your cover regularly and keep up with water testing — your pool (and your wallet) will thank you! Better yet, if you are not using the pool, leave the cover off and enjoy your beautiful water feature!
