As a mum of 5, I know how quickly toys and “stuff” can take over your living spaces 🙈
I’m no expert — but after 17 years of parenting, I’ve definitely learned a few things about keeping toys manageable (and my sanity intact!).
✨ **Less really is more**
When kids have too many toys in one basket, it often gets tipped out in seconds… and then they move on. But when they have fewer, they actually *play* with what’s in front of them.
✨ **Organise by interest**
Using containers sorted into categories (cars, craft, dolls, building, puzzles etc.) makes it easier for children to find what they’re looking for. Tidy-up time flows more smoothly too — because they know exactly where each item “lives.”
✨ **Regular resets are key**
Every 3–6 months, we go through toys together:
* If interests have changed, we clean the toys, line them up, and take photos to sell on Marketplace. The kids can save the money or put it towards something new they truly love.
* We make a donation pile.
* And if it’s broken… it goes.
✨ **Don’t forget books**
Overloaded bookshelves often mean books end up everywhere. I’ve reduced our collection and use the public library more. In the past, I’ve also rotated books — keeping a small handful on the shelf and storing the rest away in a box to swap out later.
An organised toy area benefits both child and parent 🤍
For children, it encourages focused play, creativity, and independence.
For parents, it reduces chaos, overwhelm, and daily stress.
If your home is feeling overtaken, you’re not alone — and small changes can make a big difference.
