Carpet water stains catch people out because the spill was only water. What you see is dirt, or brown colour from the backing, that the water pulled up to the tips as the patch dried.

Use very little liquid and blot hard, then leave paper towel under a flat weight overnight. A weak vinegar rinse can help with brown marks and soapy residue, but scrubbing and strong cleaners tend to make it worse. If the patch grows, smells musty or keeps coming back, look for a leak first.

Before you clean a fabric couch, lift a seat cushion and find the tag. W, S, WS or X tells you what the fabric can take, and an S couch that gets wet can brown or shrink for good.

Vacuum everything first, cushions off. Then use as little liquid as you can, blot instead of rubbing, and clean the whole panel, not just the one spot. Most water rings come from over-wetting, not the soap.

Couch cleaning quotes are easier to compare once you know how they're built. Fabric couches are priced per seat almost everywhere in Australia, and nearly every cleaner has a minimum visit charge, so a two-seater on its own often costs the same as a small combined job. Before anyone starts, ask for one GST-inclusive total in writing.
