Everyone reaches for the heat dial. On wool it matters least.

WoolSafe put probes in the pile and ran the tank at 90°C. The carpet never got much past 50°C, and only for a few seconds — the water cools the moment it leaves the jet and hits cold, wet carpet.

So if it isn't heat doing the work, what is? Two things: the chemical you choose, and the hands using it.

And chemical choice isn't just pH. A product at pH 9 can be perfectly safe; one at pH 8 can wreck a carpet. What matters is how well it's buffered — how hard it holds that pH against the fibre. pH tells you where a product starts, not how long it keeps working on the wool.

Wool is genuinely one of the most durable fibres you can put on a floor. There are rugs hundreds of years old and historic buildings around the world have wool carpets that have been going strong for generations.
But here’s the catch… 🛑

The word “WOOL” on the label tells you the fibre. It does NOT tell you the quality.

Two carpets can both be 100% wool—one can last for decades while another may show premature wear in just a few years.

So how do you tell the difference before you buy?

If a new wool carpet (or rug) sheds little broken bits under a light scratch of your fingernail …. do not accept this as “normal shedding.” It could be a sign the fiber was weakened in the manufacturing process.

✅ Buy a sample & get a bit rough with it! 

- Scratch it firmly with your fingernail at least a dozen times and shake it over a piece of paper. There SHOULDN’T be lots of different sized pieces. Strong wool is resilient. Weak wool will break easily & shed.

- Try to pull a fibre free - it shouldn’t break easily.

- Inspect the quality of the backing. Bend the sample. Does it hold its shape? Can you pull it apart? 

- Spill stuff on it and see how it reacts. Does it shed or fuzz up when blotting? Does it smell like wool or have a foul odour?

Buying a sample is a small investment compared to investing in a product that isn’t what you thought and ensures the carpet actually delivered is the same quality as the sample. 💯

⭐️ Woven wool (Axminster, Wilton, Velvet) requires strong wool to physically construct the carpet. Hand loomed /machine tufted can vary.
 🚩If the salesperson doesn’t know this! 

⭐️ Check the warranty. Manufacturers know how their product will perform. 

- If the warranty is only 5-7 years, then it’s not a quality wool or has been blended with inferior materials. 

- Be wary of long lists of exclusions, unusually specific care instructions and if it can’t be power stretched for installation. (Improper installation voids the warranty).
