Today is Donate Life National Thank you Day.
For those who know me you will know I have been an organ donor recipient with the gift of life twice!
I was the very fortunate one to receive my first kidney transplant from my beautiful mother which gifted me 6 years of life.
My second transplant is from a 31 year old male from Melbourne who made the most unbelievable decision in being an organ donor and his family are even more amazing in respecting his wishes.
As a result I have received the gift of being alive for an extra 12 years!
So many wonderful moments and many more just waiting to be created.
It was not always smooth sailing and I went through hell to get to where I am today.
WOW! Just WOW!
Thank you to my donors and to all my dear friends and family who have been constant in their love and support to this day. My promise to my donors is to make the most of every day and do you both proud.
LIFE is a blessing. The moment you treat it like one, it will feel like one. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Better late than never!
Finally able to celebrate my birthday with the family 2 weeks later after Covid struck a few of us MacKs in recent weeks.
Covid didn’t hurt me at all so I was lucky in that respect.
Being Uncle Mikey to these four is a privilege. Clancy, Lachie, Charlie and Clemi teach me more about life than I ever thought possible and how important it is to appreciate the little things. Will not be long until Hugo and Georgie are both in the pic!
❤️❤️❤️❤️

Donate Life Week: Day 6

I will be honest here. Before I experienced renal failure way back in May 2008 I can say I was completely ignorant of organ donation and the huge role it plays in giving people from all walks of life hope when all seems lost. Like many people Australia wide and still to this day people don’t pay much attention to becoming an organ donor as they don’t understand and have a head in the sand attitude. Their thoughts are, “It hasn’t happened to me or anyone I know so why bother becoming a donor”.
It’s sad but true, until you or you have a loved one fighting to stay alive no one understands struggle.
I really hope Australia very soon does go down the path of becoming an opt out to organ donation in our country. So this means everyone is a donor when they pass away and no longer need their organs. If you refuse then you pass up the opportunity to stay alive if you ever do need a life saving transplant. Controversial? Possibly. You can’t always have it both ways.

2 kidney transplants later and after many difficult times I have gained an additional 12 years of life!
Today I am proud to say I am stronger than ever both mentally and physically though it has not always been sunshine and rainbows.
Firstly organ donation from my beautiful Mother and secondly a 31 year old deceased donor from Melbourne who I will never know.
I give thanks for the Gift of Life every single day!
So many wonderful moments made and shared and the best is still to come!
Become an organ donor today. The life you save may just be someone like me.

Donate Life Week.
Life is pretty good right now though it has not always been this way.
Some absolutely unbelievable highs along with heart breaking lows. That is the life of a transplant recipient. A transplant is a treatment, not a cure.
Previously being kept alive by a dialysis machine, life is now lived taking anti-rejection medications on the daily. A much better quality of life.
What does the one represent? It indicates 1 minute. 1 minute is all it takes to register to be an organ donor. 1 minute!
Go to www.donatelife.com.au and register today. I promise you it will feel amazing! All you need is your Medicare card. And make sure you let your family and loved ones know your wishes in being an organ donor.
While you are at it, take a selfie with the finger holding number one, tag your friends and family in your post too. THANK YOU 💚💙❤️

Donate Life Week, Day 3.The wait....

Continuing on with the thread for Donate Life week here is a small snapshot of what life is like waiting for a kidney transplant after kidney failure.
Your life becomes consumed by appointments with Doctors, specialists, hospital visits, hospital stays up to 2-3 weeks in duration, kidney biopsies, really severe gastro, swelling of the body, retaining fluid, puffy feet, yellow skin, being on fluid restriction where you are only allowed to consume 1 litre of fluid for the day - (How many coffees did you drink today?, Average 2- that’s half your intake already!), not passing urine as no kidney function, catheter, cystoscopy-(Google it)- To this day the most pain I have ever been in- took 5-6 nurses in Emergency to hold me down as I was passing a blood clot, iron infusions, steroid injection to boost your red blood cell count, kidney nephrectomy, fistula surgery, prednisolone by IV and dialysis to name a few.
Ah the dreaded dialysis. A love/hate relationship. Hated the treatment but loved the fact that it was keeping me alive. 5 hours a session, 4 times a week and not always straight forward as things can go wrong- high blood pressure, low blood pressure, getting too cold, getting too hot, blows- when the needle insertion does not go into the artery and blood goes everywhere all over the walls and the floor.
No work here for 2 years as too sick and always tired. Relationship breakups as you can’t give the woman you loved the commitment she needs, Losing your home as you cannot afford the repayments and bills associated, very little assistance from the Government as your assets means test deems you with too many assets. $110 a week!
This is why I am a strong advocate for organ donation. Life was hell going through this. If I can get one person to sign up and that person ends up saving a life or 7 then that is a message worth passing on.
Become a donor today! That person you save may just be your loved one or someone like me.
