Spring is here and so are the snakes -

What to do if you see a snake in your garden or house:

DO NOT corner the snake or try to harm it (80% of snake bites are caused by people trying to kill the snake)

Perth is experiencing a warm start to the winter season this year, with a few odd heavy showers making it a perfect environment for ants to be more active than usual especially the Coastal brown ants (Pheidole megacephala pictured here) also called big-headed ants, which are a major nuisance in Western Australia. RATS are invading on suburban Perth homes in search of food after cafes and restaurants were forced to close due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
We have noticed a significant increase in rodent activity for this time of year.

We normally see an increase in winter when rats tend to come inside where it is warmer and typically, they nest in the roof in the insulation, which is a perfect breeding ground.

It’s highly possible that with so many cafes and restaurants closed due to the lock down restrictions that the rats don’t have bins to forage through, so they are moving in to the suburbs and people’s homes.

‘Tis the season to be jolly but it’s also the favourite time of year for the European house borer (EHB), a serious pest that loves the dead coniferous softwood of your Christmas trees! Established in the greater Perth area since 2004, it has the potential to cause significant damage to structural timber in homes.
To both protect your home and prevent the greatest risk of spread, do not collect or move exposed pinewood, or leave it uncovered.
EHB exit holes in dead pinewood or timber are oval-shaped, 5-10mm long and run with the grain of the wood. Adult beetles, brownish-black in colour and 8-25mm in length, are more easily spotted during flight season (September to April). Look in dead pine trees, logs, debris and dead parts of living pine trees, as well as timber, furniture and pallets.
