If pillows are exposed to moisture and not properly maintained, mould can become a real problem.
Pillows can accumulate moisture from various sources such as sweat, saliva, and humidity. Going to bed with wet hair is not a great idea!
Pillows that are not adequately ventilated, especially those made of materials that trap moisture like memory foam, can promote mould growth.
Without proper airflow, moisture gets trapped inside the pillow, providing an ideal environment for mould spores to thrive.
Mould spores are everywhere and they can settle on pillows, especially if they are kept in damp or humid areas.
Once spores find a suitable environment with moisture and organic material (like pillow filling), they can germinate and grow into mould colonies. Yikes!
Storing pillows in damp or humid rooms, like basements or closets with poor ventilation, can increase mould growth.
Old or damaged pillows, with tears or broken seals, are more susceptible to mould growth.
To prevent pillows from becoming a source of mould:
• Use pillow protectors or covers that are waterproof and breathable to prevent moisture from seeping into the pillow.
• Wash pillowcases and covers regularly to remove sweat, oils, and other contaminants.
• Air out pillows regularly in a well-ventilated area or the sun, to help remove moisture., especially if you sweat alot.
• Replace pillows that show signs of mould growth, damage, or age-related wear to maintain a healthy sleeping environment.
• Store pillows in a cool, dry place with good ventilation to minimize the risk of mould contamination.
If in doubt, bin it!
