WHAT HAPPENS IF WE HIT ROCK? 🪨

Nick has always said, "We've never had a pool we've not managed to get in."

And while that's still true, we've had TWO jobs recently that have really put that statement to the test!

One in Narrogin and one in Cunderdin, where we've hit solid granite in about 90% of the hole. And when we say solid, we mean SOLID.

Rock is one of those unknown variables we simply can't account for in our quotes. We can assess the site and make an educated guess, but until we start digging, we don't know what's hiding underneath.

It's a far cry from the nice sandy sites of Perth's inner suburbs out here in regional WA!

Our 10-tonne excavator can get through most things, including the coffee rock we encountered in Wundowie this week. But these two jobs? They weren't budging!

So, what happens when we hit rock?

Well, we go to Plan B. And sometimes Plan C, D or even E!

We assess the situation. Is there another suitable spot for the pool? Can we adjust the position to avoid the worst of it? Or do we just have to find a way through?

In both cases, the pool needed to go exactly where we'd planned. So, moving it wasn't an option.

Which brings us to our newest fleet addition... our very own rock drill!

It's not a quick process. Drill holes into the granite, fill them with expanding grout, wait for the rock to crack, then get back in with the rockbreaker to remove it.

But we're getting there!

✅ Cunderdin: Pool installation finally complete!

✅ Narrogin: After FOUR visits tackling the granite, the pool is FINALLY going in next week on visit number five!

These are the challenges that come with installing pools in regional WA. Every site is different, and sometimes a straightforward dig turns into a much bigger job than anticipated.

We can't promise there won't be rock, or that it won't add time and cost. But we'll always assess the options, be upfront about what's involved and do everything we reasonably can to find a solution.

And as Nick keeps reminding us...

Pool quotes: Are you comparing apples with apples?

One pool quote is $8,000 cheaper than the other. Easy decision, right?

Well, maybe. But we'd definitely be asking a few questions first.

Pool quotes can be tricky to compare, particularly when you're building in regional WA.

We've seen quotes over the years where the initial price looks fantastic, but once you start looking at what's actually included, things can be quite different.

A few things we'd suggest checking:
✔️ How much excavation is allowed for? And what happens if they hit rock? Have they just allowed for a bobcat dig on a level sandy site? That is often far from the truth in regional WA areas.
✔️ Is delivery to your property included?
✔️ Are crane costs included if one is required?
✔️ What equipment are you getting? Pumps, filters and chlorinators aren't all the same. Are they reputable companies with good warranty terms?
✔️ Is the backfill included, and what type are they using?
✔️ Are there any additional travel or accommodation costs?
✔️ What happens if something unexpected comes up during installation?

We're big believers in realistic allowances and transparent quoting because nobody enjoys being hit with unexpected costs halfway through a project.

And sometimes the cheaper quote genuinely is the better option. We just want people to understand exactly what they're comparing before making that decision.

Our advice? Compare apples with apples, not just the number at the bottom of the page.

Pool positioning: There's a bit more to it than the view - you've got 5 acres. So where on earth do you put the pool? 🤔

One of the perks of having a bit of land is that you've usually got a few more options when it comes to positioning your pool.

And while that spot down the back overlooking the paddocks might look fantastic, there are a few things we'd encourage you to think about first.

☀️ The afternoon sun. A bit of shade can be lovely on a 40-degree day, but too much shade over the pool can make the water cooler than you'd like, particularly at the start and end of summer.

🏡 How far is it from the house? You don't necessarily want to be trekking halfway across the property every time someone wants a swim. Having the pool close to your main living areas is also great for keeping an eye on the kids, although it doesn't replace active adult supervision.

🌿 What can you see from the house? You've spent a fair bit of money on this thing, so you may as well be able to admire it! There's something really calming about looking out over the water, even when nobody's swimming.

💨 And don't forget the wind. Anyone living in regional WA knows how much dust, leaves and everything else can blow around on a windy day.

We love working with acreage properties because there's often so much potential to get the positioning just right.

Sometimes moving the pool a few metres can make a huge difference to how you'll use it for years to come.

Handing over $40k+ to someone to dig a giant hole in your backyard is a pretty big deal. 😅

And when you're building in regional WA, there's a whole lot more to think about. Finding a builder who actually services your area, getting machinery and materials to site, coordinating everything and hoping it all goes to plan.

We know there's a lot of trust involved when someone chooses us to install their pool, and we certainly don't take that lightly.

We're a family business with our own installation team, and we genuinely care about making the whole process as straightforward as possible. From the first phone call and quote through to the boys packing up their gear and heading off to the next job.

Side entry steps are having a bit of a moment lately… and we can see why 👀
