That’s not red sediment in your shower – it’s pink mould!

I have noticed that more and more homes are having issues with pink mould, especially in their showers.

Most people think it’s simply red sediment in the water that is settling, but this is not the case. Pink mould is actually a bacterium not a fungi like black mould, and it can cause all kinds of nasties such as urinary tract infections, respiratory issues, conjunctivitis and more.

If you have pink mould, the best thing you can do to get rid of it is mix 250ml of water with 5 drops of clove oil, 5 drops of lemon oil, 5 drops of lavender oil and 5 drops of eucalyptus oil. Then add a squeeze of dishwashing detergent as a foaming agent and to break through the fatty grease/soap scum (which is what the bacteria is feeding on). You can use this solution to clean with by spraying, scrubbing and using a squeegee to clean/dry off the tiles. This is better than rinsing off as the solution will sit in the grout preventing further mould from developing.

Lastly, make sure those kiddies are not sitting on the floor in the shower until the mould is gone.
