Launched in July, the Federal Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program has exceeded expectations, with 200,000 batteries installed in just six months.
Rooftop solar can save households and small businesses up to $1500 year on their energy bills. By adding a battery, these savings can almost double when clean solar energy is stored for use during peak demand.
Since the Federal Government’s program commenced, Australia’s battery storage capacity has doubled to around 4.7 GWh. An expansion of the program funding from $2.3 billion to $7.2 billion, announced in December 2025, will see the number of home batteries expected to be installed double from the previous 1 million forecast, to 2 million by 2030.
Big batteries and home battery systems are helping to keep the lights on, air conditioners running and power prices down for all Australians, especially during extreme weather like the recent heatwave, by storing power from when it’s generated to when it is needed most. With coal-fired power stations becoming less reliable and more prone to breaking down, batteries big and small are keeping the electricity grid reliable and stable.
A huge congratulations to the thousands of Australian small businesses, including installers, retailers and manufacturers, who have been instrumental in reaching this milestone and enabling 200,000 Aussie households benefit from home battery systems.
