3 common cleaning habits that can actually make your home dirtier over time 👀
As a professional cleaner, these are things I see all the time in homes and most people don’t realise the impact they’re having.
1. Bar soap in the shower
Bar soap reacts with minerals in water (especially hard water), creating soap scum on glass, tiles and shower screens.
Over time, this buildup traps dirt, oils and bacteria, making showers harder to keep clean and requiring more frequent deep cleans.
Liquid body wash generally causes less buildup as it doesn’t react the same way.
2. Feather dusters
They don’t actually remove dust, they just move it into the air where it resettles on surfaces.
Dust is made up of skin cells, fibres and debris, so the goal is to remove it completely.
A damp microfibre cloth is far more effective as it traps and holds dust instead of spreading it.
3. Wiping cleaning products too quickly (dwell time)
Most cleaning products need time to break down grease, grime and bacteria.
Wiping straight away reduces their effectiveness and can leave residue behind. Letting products sit for a few minutes makes a big difference in results.
Cleaning isn’t about doing more it’s about doing it properly 🫧
