It's been a long time coming, Melbourne Detailing Centre has closed its doors for the last time.

What a great journey, working with some of the best vehicles ever made. Pushing the limits of what was possible in paint correction.

MDC was a battle against the conventional. Refusing to accept current industry trends of acceptable standards. Constant pursuit for excellence, often at our own detriment to provide the best finish possible. The search for improvement in products, processes and techniques. Never conforming and always evolving.

MDC was a passion.

There are some people I'd like to publicly thank.

Adrian for his support, patronage and friendship. His trust in our ability allowed us to showcase our talents on truly remarkable vehicles.

Eliseo who you may remember joined us while at our Port Melbourne workshop.

And lastly, my daughter, Messina. She was the inspiration for MDC. It was when we finally fell pregnant with her that I realised the need to build something for her to be proud of her father for.

Lamborghini Gallardo (Twin Turbo)

This menacing Lamborghini had Ceramic Lite installed, chosen for the deep glow it produces on the paintwork without sacrificing maximum clarity of the metallic in the finish. The matt black sections were also coated to produce a deep lustre, providing a sharp contrast to the high gloss metallic.

You can see how the system we have developed accentuates the sharp angels of the panels. There is more to than simply removing scratches.

This car is a 'god' in the JDM community, with prices now through the roof. Over the following three posts we will show what processes MDC takes to get this rare collector's example to the next level.

The first stage is what we classify as preparation stage. The is foamed with a dedicated pre wash foam. It's role is to assist in softening all physical dirt on the surface so it can be removed with a pressure wash. We use a mild solution and brush to agitate crevices. Next wheels and arches are treated and cleaned with various specific chemicals to break down road grime and break dust, then neutralised. Vehicle is rinsed down and hand washed to remove all remaining oils and dirt.

Next we get to the decontamination stage. Here we remove any bonded contaminants from the paint. This is done both mechanically with a 'clay bar or pad', and chemically with iron removers and other specialised chemicals over a number of steps, rinsing between each one. During this step we switch to our filtered water setup. As there is no protection on the paint work it will be naked, we do not want any standing water to leave any trace minerals on surface.

The vehicle is then dried with both a hot air drier and dedicated drying towels. Lastly a solvent based chemical is used to degrease the surface, ready for inspection in our correction area with different specialized lighting and environment. Self Healing Ceramic Coating

The holy grail for ceramic based surface is a solution that prevents scratches on your paint. Unfortunately this is not a commercial reality.

The solution, we at MDC have found is a self healing . Fine scratches and micro swirls in the surface vanish, revealing a super glossy reflective surface, but how does this work?

Firstly we require a coating that is thick enough to fill in the pores of the paint and to create a new nano surface structure, at the same time thick enough to absorb the scratch within the coating.

FEYNLAB® SELF-HEAL PLUS requires 6x 50ml bottles of product to be combined to activate and create separate sub layers with different properties. There are 4 separate application layers, which when combined create a cross linked matrix of ceramic polymers. Yes, that is 300ml of product installed to your vehicle paint as opposed to 10-30mls of other offerings. Science not marketing.

To activate healing simply park the vehicle in direct sun where the temperature is 30°C or higher and the Ceramic Polymer Matrix will reset. Hot water or steam can also be used to regenerate the surface to visibly remove swirls, minor stains and scratches at a fraction of the price of PPF.
