This particular customer had already had a vacate carpet clean when they contacted us. The carpet cleaner told her that the stain was permanent and that no one could remove it. She was distressed because the Real Estate Agent wanted to keep her bond to replace the carpet.

After some research she found us online from our Google 5 Star reviews. When our technician got on site they asked multiple questions to try to work out what had caused the stain.

In this instance there had been a black standing fan in the corner of the bedroom, the bottom of the fan had no rust or colour missing and the bedroom was at the front of the property on a major road.

Process of deduction revealed that the stain was caused by filtration soiling (due to proximity to road fumes and soiling).

Needless to say we completely removed the filtration lines from this wool carpet and the customer was delighted.

If you have ever had your carpet cleaner tell you a stain was permanent, make sure to reach out to see if we can remove it for you.

Did you know that if you spill bleach or a cleaning product that results in loss of colour on your carpets that you do not have to patch it, nor do you have to replace the entire carpet?

We specialise in carpet spot dyeing, which can disguise the damage.

Our dyes are safe, non-toxic and are the same as those used by carpet mills. Dyes are instantly permanent and will last the life span of the carpet.

How often should you REALLY have your carpets professionally cleaned?

The answer isn’t simply ā€œonce a yearā€.

How often your carpet needs professional cleaning depends on how you actually live in your home.

A lightly used spare bedroom and a busy family living room shouldn’t have the same maintenance schedule.

Things that can influence how frequently your carpets need attention include:

āļøFoot traffic: hallways, living areas and stairs generally accumulate soil faster.
āļøChildren and pets: more activity can mean more hair, dander, tracked-in soil, spills and accidents.
āļøCarpet fibre and construction: different fibres have different characteristics and maintenance requirements.
āļøVacuuming frequency: regular, thorough vacuuming helps remove dry particulate soil before it becomes embedded deeper in the pile.
āļøSpills and accidents: these may require attention well before your next scheduled clean.
āļøYour household environment: how the carpet is used matters just as much as how old it is.

And here’s something many people don’t realise: carpet can look clean without actually being clean.

Carpet is very good at concealing fine particulate soil. Dirt can work its way down between the fibres long before the carpet starts looking obviously dirty.

That’s why waiting until your carpet looks dirty isn’t necessarily the best maintenance strategy.

Have pets?

Your carpet is generally working harder.

Hair, dander, tracked-in soil and accidents can all affect how frequently it needs attention. Pet urine is particularly important because urine contamination is not the same as ordinary carpet soiling and may require specialised treatment.

Don’t underestimate vacuuming

Professional carpet cleaning doesn’t replace regular vacuuming.

At Chem-Dry Metro, we begin our carpet cleaning process with professional HEPA-filtered vacuuming to remove as much dry particulate soil as possible before the cleaning process begins.

So, how often should you professionally clean your carpet?

Rather than treating these as rigid rules, a useful maintenance guide is:

āļøLow-use areas: approximately every 12–18 months
āļøAverage households: approximately every 6–12 months
āļøHomes with pets: approximately every 3–6 months, or as required
āļøHigh-traffic areas: approximately every 3–6 months
āļøAllergy-sensitive households: potentially more frequently depending on individual circumstances

The important thing is to think condition, not just calendar.

A professional should consider your carpet fibre, construction, traffic, household, maintenance history and overall condition before recommending what it actually needs.

After more than 20 years cleaning and restoring carpets across Melbourne, one thing we know is that good carpet care isn’t about cleaning unnecessarily.

It’s about maintaining your carpet properly so it looks better, performs better and lasts longer.

Not sure whether yours needs cleaning yet? Ask us. We’re always happy to provide professional advice.

We could seriously write a book at some of the things we’ve encountered cleaning carpets over the last two decades.

Some customers will swear they’ve not tried to use anything to remove the carpet stain before we get there, but as trained professionals, we can always tell.

Funnily enough we’ve had multiple people try to use white wine to remove a red wine stain. Not sure if that’s been a Google suggested home remedy or not. Fun fact …. it doesn’t work 🫣

How long does upholstery take to dry after cleaning?

This is a multifaceted question and can depend upon not only the composition of the furniture piece but can also be determined by the cleaning process and the operator.

We’ve been told horror stories from our clients where their sofa had water dripping out of it 2 days after a ā€œprofessional cleanā€. One of our long term clients in Port Melbourne had to have her floating floor replaced due to the volume of water her previous cleaner had used to clean a 3 seater couch and the amount of water that was coming out underneath it. (Obviously those operators were not trained professionals)

A Hot Carbonating Extraction (HCE) clean by Chem-Dry Metro significantly reduces drying times compared to standard professional methods.

While standard professional cleaning typically leaves furniture damp for anywhere between 4 to 24 hours, a Chem-Dry Metro upholstery clean allows fabrics to dry in 3 to 4 hours. Under optimal conditions, the fabric can be completely touch-dry in as little as 2 to 3 hours.

Why do upholstery dry times matter? Because the longer they are left wet or damp, the more chance for internal damage to the frame, as well as more chance of causing mould or bacteria to grow!

We look after the carpet, rugs and delicate upholstery for many high end retail boutiques across Melbourne.

This particular store has beautiful velvet lounge suites which are very expensive but also quite finicky to deal with.

As a mother was in the change room, her young toddler decided it was time for his art lesson and that the velvet sofa was his canvas.

The photos don’t show exactly how deep the black ink had gone. This definitely was a job for a well seasoned and highly trained professional upholstery cleaner.

Our commercial client is delighted with the result as we have been able to completely remove the black ink stains and fully save this piece.
