Hey fellow Melburnians (and Aussies with classic Aussie-built rides)!

With all this talk about the government temporarily allowing “dirty fuel” (higher sulphur petrol up to 50ppm instead of the super-clean 10ppm) for the next 60 days to avoid shortages and crazy price spikes especially with global supply issues I’ve been digging into how it affects our cars.
Good news for those of us with Australian built legends (Holden Commodores, Ford Falcons, Toyota Camrys from the local era, etc.):
These cars were designed and tuned for fuel with higher sulphur levels back in the day (up to 150ppm for 91 RON pre-2025). This is basically going back to what they ran on perfectly fine for years. Short-term (just 2 months), experts like NRMA and others say the impact is negligible no major damage expected for normal driving.
Still, to play it safe and keep my pride and joy running sweet:

• Switching to premium 95 or 98 RON whenever I can (burns cleaner, less stress on the cat and injectors).

• Sticking to big-name stations (Shell, BP, Caltex, etc.) for better quality control.

• Throwing in a decent fuel system cleaner additive every couple of tanks (cheap insurance!).

• Keeping up with basics like fuel filter if due.
It’s temporary
reverts back to ultra-low sulphur soon. No need to panic or garage the car.
Our Aussie classics are tougher than this little blip!
