Roblox rolls out new age assurance features to prevent teens and kids from chatting with adults they do not know.

The changes were heralded by the Australian eSafety commissioner as proof of the success of their efforts to make platforms safer, having been in negotiations with Roblox for several months about safety concerns for the platform.

From today users will be able to voluntarily have their age estimated, and the feature will become mandatory from the first week of December.

Once an age check is done, users will be assigned to one of six age groups – under 9, 9-12, 13-15, 16-17, 18-20 or 21+.

U16s SOCIAL MEDIA BAN

Australia’s social media ban for under 16s is due to start on 10 December 2025. Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube and X are already included. Reddit and Kick have also been added.

Parents can now say "It is against the law for me to allow you to use these platforms."

Platforms that fail to take reasonable steps to prevent kids under the age of 16 years having accounts could face fines of up to AU$49 million.

The Australian Government has launched an online safety campaign that parents can engage with. Visit https://www.esafety.gov.au/ for more info.

Important new case law out of the FCFCOA at Melbourne to properly build on Masson v Parsons [2019] in this space, cementing that the best interests of the donor conceived child are indeed the paramount consideration. The distinguishing feature of this case, however, is the removal of parental responsibility.
Visit https://www.cdtlegal.com.au/law-news for a summary of the issues and findings. This case highlights the importance of ALL PARTIES obtaining thorough advice as to the potential issues, and of addressing time and parenting matters in pre-conception agreements.
