A lot of people see mould and think she'll be right, the honest reality is that mould is more than that ugly patch of black. Mould spreads through the air and can affect your health, not just with a sniffy nose, sore eyes, scratchy throat but also constant headaches and other health issues, it too does affect your mental health, with depression and anxiety being a HUGE factor as well.
Unfortunately this is not the first story we have seen, many more around Australia and the world.

If you see black mould or even have a musty smell please get it looked at before you touch it yourself, because when you think you are doing the right thing for your family and yourself, you could actually be putting yourselves at more risk.

Winter is here and it's a great time for lots of us to go on holidays to somewhere with warmer weather! Watch out though, as mould can actually grow on your passport if the circumstances are right and this can mean your passport becomes invalid and you can't board your flight!
Don't let this happen to you! You might think your passport being stored in a safe or drawer means it's protected, but mould can even grow inside these places if there's humid or damp conditions. The best way to protect your passport is to store it in a secure container and place some tissue around it as a barrier between the passport and the container wall. The tissue will absorb any dampness or condensation, which stops it from spreading to your passport and keeps it safe for when you need it!

⚠️ 🚨 WARNING! 🚨 ⚠️
DO NOT MIX BLEACH WITH VINEGAR!

Chlorine bleach is useful for its disinfecting and brightening properties, while vinegar is known for its sanitizing, stain removal, and deodorising powers. Many, many people believe that bleach and/or vinegar is an effective mould-killing solution, but not only is this totally false, it's also potentially fatal!
When powdered or liquid chlorine bleach mixes with an acid—like vinegar—the sodium hypochlorite in the bleach turns into hypochlorous acid, which emits chlorine gas into the surrounding air. Chlorine gas is highly toxic—so much so that during World War I, a potent variant of it was used in trench warfare to knock out Allied troops! The gas gives off an extremely pungent smell, and while it looks yellow-green in large volumes it is invisible in small quantities. Chlorine gas exposure can cause burning, reddening or blistering skin, burning sensation in the eyes, nose, and throat, chest tightness, difficulty breathing, nausea and vomiting. Long-term exposure can lead to pulmonary edema (i.e., fluid build-up in the lungs), which can prove fatal.

MYTH: A clean or new house will prevent mould growing.

FACT: New homes are often more likely to have serious mould problems than old homes. This is due to modern construction materials (such as drywall) that absorb more moisture than older products and take longer to dry, plus they contain more nutrients that mould loves. New houses are also now sealed so effectively that they have much less fresh air circulation, so when mould and damp begin to escalate they becomes concentrated and can cause potentially serious health problems including asthma attacks, sinus problems, allergies, fatigue and numerous other ailments.
Mould is NOT about dirt, or bad housekeeping, it's about excess moisture. Too much humidity in the air can encourage mould to develop no matter how clean your home is.

❓DOES BLEACH KILL MOULD?❓

The first thing that comes to mind when you notice you have mould in the house is how to get rid of it. For most homeowners, bleach seems to be the answer to all of their mould problems as it's easily accessible and seems to visibly remove the mould once they apply it. However, mould actually spreads its roots deep into whatever material it grows on to reach more nutrients. This means that when you apply bleach, it quickly dries off on the surface and doesn't reach into the deeper part of the material to the mould’s root. So in a few days or weeks, the mould simply regains its colour and grows back. Moreover, since bleach is made up of 90% water, and moulds thrive with moisture, spraying bleach on mould can ensure that it grows back even worse than it was before or in new areas.
Bleach can also jeopardise your health! When in a gas state, chlorine bleach produces a byproduct called dioxin, which is a cancer-causing compound. In addition to this, mixing chlorine bleach with ammonia, drain cleaners, cleansers, or any other similar chemical produces chlorine gas, which is extremely harmful to your health. Exposure to chlorine gas can negatively affect the lungs or cause breathing anomalies, mostly when used around individuals with a lung condition like asthma.
If you've found mould in your home, the best course of action is to call in the professionals to treat it quickly and safely and ensure a happier, healthier home!

❓❓ WHAT IS MILDEW? ❓❓

Mildew is a specific type of mould and, like other kinds of mould, is a microscopic fungus that travels through the air in the form of tiny spores. When these spores land in damp or humid environments, mildew begins to colonise and grow. Unlike mould, mildew doesn’t pe*****te surfaces and grow into the materials it lands on (though it can still cause cosmetic damage). Instead, it grows on top of flat surfaces and often collects in places like the grout between your bathroom tiles. Mildew is generally white or gray in color and over time it turns yellow and eventually dark brown or black. While mildew is not as dangerous to your health as certain types of toxic mould (black mould, for example), nor is it as damaging to your home, mildew should still be taken seriously and it’s important to remove it as quickly as possible in order to prevent adverse health effects and/or cosmetic damage to your home. The good news about mildew is that since it grows on surfaces, it’s often easier to spot in its early stages than mould and is much easier to remove. Because mildew sits on top of the surfaces it grows on, all you generally need to remove it is a good household cleaner and a scrub brush.
