Supervision is key to keeping young children safe around backyard pools. Pool barriers also have an important role to play as they are proven to reduce the risk of drowning.
Since 2000, 27 young children have drowned in private swimming pools and spas. In at least 20 of those cases, the non-compliance of the safety barrier is likely to have played a role.
If you own a pool or spa, you must register it with your local council by 1 June 2020. You’re now also required to obtain certificates confirming the compliance of your pool or spa barrier every four years.
