Happy NAIDOC Week

National NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia in the first week of July each year (Sunday to Sunday), to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth.

Reconciliation is more than raising awareness and knowledge. As a nation, and importantly, as people, we need to move from 'safe' to 'brave' in order to advance reconciliation.

This year's National Reconciliation Week's theme 'More Than A Word' urges us all to take action. Check out '20 Actions you can take for Reconciliation in 2021' below.

Each year NAIDOC Week celebrations are normally held during July in honour of the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Due to the COVID healthcare crisis, NAIDOC Week was held last week on 8-15 November 2020. The NAIDOC theme - Always Was, Always Will Be. - recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years.

While NAIDOC Week 2020 might be over, there's still a lot of work left to do. Let's start by normalising the celebration of Indigenous cultures every, and not just for NAIDOC Week! And let's listen - by ratifying the Uluru Statement and starting the national truth telling process, so that we may heal and move forward together.
