Hunter Resource Recovery

Hunter Resource Recovery Recycling (yellow bin) for Cessnock, Lake Macquarie, Maitland and Singleton. Helping residents recycle right — so your waste isn't wasted.

With commentary from Barry the bin chicken (the OG binfluencer) and help from Hunter the Recycling Retriever. Hunter Resource Recovery manages recycling and waste education across Cessnock, Lake Macquarie, Maitland and Singleton councils. We're here to cut through the confusion — because most recycling mistakes aren't laziness, they're misinformation. And misinformation is Barry the bin chicken's

least favourite thing. Follow for straight-talking recycling guides, the occasional surprise fact that'll change how you look at your yellow bin, and appearances from Barry, who has watched things happen in silence for long enough. Not sure what goes where? Check the Recycle Right A-Z Guide at hrr.com.au — 5,000+ items, three seconds, no guessing. Make sure your waste isn't wasted.

G'day mates! Bazza here.

Quick one for ya — you've got an old t-shirt, a worn-out blanket, and a busted pair of thongs. 👕🛏️

Which one can go in the yellow bin? 🟡
Which one goes in the red bin? 🔴
And which one should NEVER go in either? 🚫

Drop your answers below 👇 and let's see how many REALcyclers we've got in the Hunter!

Spotted the REALcycling ad at HOYTS Green Hills, Reading Maitland, Event Glendale, Lake Cinema, HOYTS Charlestown or Reading Charlestown? 🎬❤️

Barry says hello from the big screen. But be quick — his cinematic run ends May 31!

He's been on a billboard before, but cinema is different.
He's already written his acceptance speech.
(It's three pages long. He thanked the bin behind Maccas. He cried. We all cried.)

Follow our page for more. That's REALcycling. Make sure your waste isn't wasted.

Shredded paper doesn't belong in your kerbside recycling bin! 🚫
Those tiny pieces slip through sorting machines and contaminate everything else.
Better uses? Compost it 🌱 or pop it in as pet bedding 🐾
Small switch, big difference. That's REALcycling. 💚

🔥 This could be a recycling truck near you. 🔥

Lithium batteries in your kerbside bin can combust — putting drivers at risk and writing off entire loads of recyclables.

Don't bin your e-waste. Drop batteries and electronics at your local Community Recycling Centre for free. 💚

🎉 Congratulations to Bethany Joanna Knight!

We were so proud to be part of the Cessnock City Council Mayoral Scholarship Program 2026 last week, and even prouder to present Bethany with a $2,500 scholarship to support her journey ahead.

Our very own Anna was on hand to help celebrate the occasion and present Bethany with her award — it was a wonderful afternoon recognising some truly inspiring young people from our community.

We love being part of events like this and are so grateful to support the next generation of talent right here in the Cessnok region. Bethany, we can't wait to see what you achieve! 💛

That takeaway coffee cup? Not recyclable. The plastic lining ruins the process. General waste, Simply Cups at 7-Eleven, or BYO cup. That's REALcycling! 💚

💐 Happy Mother’s Day to all the amazing mums out there! 💐

Today’s all about celebrating the legends who keep the wheels turning — raising families, looking out for everyone, and teaching us (whether we noticed or not) how to look after the world around us too.
From reusing containers instead of chucking them, making do, mending, and passing down good values along with good advice, mums show us that the best things in life aren’t throwaway. 🌱
This Mother’s Day, let’s thank Mum in ways that are thoughtful, meaningful, and a bit kinder to the planet — because looking after Mum and looking after the Earth go hand in hand. 💚

Eco gift ideas Mum might love:
♻️ A reusable coffee cup or water bottle
🌿 A potted plant or herbs for the kitchen
🕯️ Candles or skincare made from natural ingredients
🛍️ A handmade or upcycled gift with a story behind it
🧾 A shared experience instead of “stuff” — brunch, a walk, or time together
