• Swarming is a natural part of termite reproduction, not a sign of seasonal die‑off.

🚫 MYTH‑BUSTING: SUMP OIL IS NOT A TERMITE TREATMENT — AND NEVER WAS

So let’s bust every myth once and for all.

MYTH 1: “We used sump oil back in the day and never had termites.”

FACT:
Sump oil was never a termite treatment.
Old houses often had dieldrin, chlordane, or heptachlor — real chemicals that lasted decades.
People confuse those with sump oil.

Sump oil was just a DIY add‑on that did nothing.

MYTH 2: “Termites hate the smell.”

FACT:
Termites don’t care about smell.
They tunnel around sump oil, through it, or under it.
It does not repel, kill, or block them.

MYTH 3: “It’s harmless — just recycling oil.”

FACT:
Sump oil contains:

• Hydrocarbons
• Heavy metals
• Carcinogens

Dumping it into soil is land contamination.

On SMBI’s sandy soils, it spreads fast into:

• Groundwater
• Wetlands
• Mangroves
• Marine ecosystems

MYTH 4: “It’s cheaper than Termidor.”

FACT:
Cheap shortcuts cost more later.
Sump oil offers zero protection, meaning:

• Termites still attack
• Damage continues
• Repairs cost thousands
• You still need a proper barrier afterward

MYTH 5: “It’s not illegal — everyone does it.”

FACT:
Under the Environmental Protection Act 1994 (Qld), sump oil use can be classified as:

• General Environmental Harm
• Material Environmental Harm
• Serious Environmental Harm

Penalties include:

• Significant fines
• Cleanup cost liability
• Council or DES investigations

People still do it — but that doesn’t make it legal.

MYTH 6: “My mate said it works”.

FACT:
Unless someone is a licensed pest controller, they are not qualified to give termite advice.
Termite management is regulated under:

• APVMA

• QLD pest management licensing

MYTH 7: “It’s better than nothing.”

FACT:
It’s actually worse than nothing.

🐜 This is why termite inspections matter — even on vacant properties.

We recently carried out a termite inspection at a vacant property and found some pretty significant damage.

The termites had already worked their way through the window frame and skirting boards, and had started moving into the timber framework of the home.

From the outside, there wasn’t anything that immediately screamed “termites” — but once we started inspecting, the damage was there.

A vacant house can easily go months or even years without anyone noticing termite activity, giving them plenty of time to cause damage.

Don’t wait until you find this much damage. Regular termite inspections can pick up activity before it gets to this stage.

🐜 STEEL SHED? DON’T ASSUME YOU’RE SAFE FROM TERMITES!

It’s a common belief that a steel shed means termites aren’t a problem — but unfortunately, that’s not always the case.

Termites can’t eat through steel, but they can still get inside through cracks, cold joints and gaps in the concrete.

Once they’re in, they can reach timber and other materials inside the shed. 😬

That’s why it’s important to keep an eye out for signs of termite activity and arrange regular inspections — even if your shed is made of steel.
