Are you about to get a new bathroom?
I put together a list of the things I'd NOT HAVE in my bathroom based on my experience as a cleaner.
Looks matter, but things that look great in showrooms end up not looking so good with daily use. Practicality is the key to keep areas looking clean and tidy for longer without having to spend too much time and effort. So here are my picks:
1- Linear drains.
They are extremely time consuming to clean and because they tend to "hold" soap scum a lot more than the old style drains they look dirty a lot quicker. If you go to my "before and after" posts you'd have an idea of how dirty they can get in a very short time. I'd go for the little square style one, still very pretty, but way quicker to clean.
2- The single giant shower head.
Well, if you don't wash your hair every time you have a shower be prepared to. Cleaning a shower screen with one of this can be quite a challenge unless you are happy to get wet. If not, you will need a bucket and a tap nearby, so it's quite time consuming. I'd go for the super practical adjustable hand held all in one. So easy to use, suitable for all shapes, tastes and sizes and the hand held tap makes cleaning a breeze.
3- Free standing bathtubs.
Depending on the space available between the bathtub and the wall, cleaning can be a challenge, with spots that are literally impossible to reach, leading to build up dust, grime and mold.
4- Mirrors as a splashback.
Unless you enjoy drying the mirror everytime you use the tap I'd highly recommend against this choice of mirror. The further up the mirror is from the tap and sink, the better.
5- Sink right next to shower screen.
Same reason why the mirror splashback is not a good idea. Leaving a good gap in between sink and glass or having the sink further away from the glass comes very handy.
6- Sinks and tiles in porous and textured matte materials.
Great for showrooms, but not so good for everyday use as they stain very easily. Textured matte tiles on the walls gather an unbelievable amount of dust. I'd go for the slick surfaces, easy to wipe off and maintain.
