You might have known that copraphagy (eating manure) in foals is very common/normal and is essential for kickstarting the gut microbiome before they start eating - their first prebiotic, so to speak!

And it seems that (within reason) the more manure the foals consume, the more fibre and bacteria they consume, the better the gut innoculation. Makes sense.

But the interesting thing I learned this morning reading a PhD dissertation, is that foals that have dams that produce less milk, consume more manure. And milk yield is linked to non-structural carbohydrates in the dam's diet. So mares being fed high starch diets, produce more milk which actually reduces the amount of manure the foal eats, lowering the amount of prebiotics they are getting to start their fibre fermentating lives!

Obviously this is within the realm of a healthy/sufficient amount of milk to meet the foals growth needs...

I think that's very cool 🤓 And it all links up with forage first, low starch feeding even in breeding horses, and slower growth rates for long healthy lives! Nature is neat.
