Rabbits might look cute, and harmless but they've become the single greatest cause of species decline in Australia. πŸ‡

Their insatiable appetites have made them a threat to more than 300 nationally listed threatened species. Australian plants simply didn't evolve to cope with such intense browsing, leaving native ecosystems stripped of the food and shelter that wildlife depends on.

Rabbits also compete directly with native animals like bilbies and rock-wallabies, while providing a reliable food source for feral cats and foxes, increasing the pressure on already threatened species.

Australia has led the world in developing biological controls to manage rabbits, but as they evolve resistance, scientists must keep innovating to stay ahead.

Protecting Australia's wildlife means tackling one of its most destructive invaders.

Does this surprise you? Let us know in the comments if you've noticed more rabbits in your local area. πŸ‘‡

This buy back is all about governments looking like they are doing something whilst in reality all they will achieve is unnecessary debt. No public benefit will flow from this, only financial pain and angry responsible fi****ms owners who again are the whipping boys for clueless governments.

Would be nice if our local councils in the Capital Region ran a program like this. Plenty of bunnies are living rent free on council land.

πŸ‡ Targeted rabbit control program planned for Ultima!

We're currently finalising plans for a targeted rabbit control program across approximately 181 kilometres of road reserves in the Ultima area to help reduce rabbit impacts on agriculture, infrastructure and the natural environment.

Long-term success relies on a coordinated approach and we're encouraging landholders to continue rabbit control efforts on their own properties too.

πŸ‡ Unfortunately rabbits don’t recognise property boundaries - so working together is key to achieving lasting results!

I recently attended a farm hydration day presented by the Mulloon Institute. Peter was involved with those guys early on. A rebel, maverick, not well accepted at the time but the principles are standing up over time and now being embraced. Check out these highlights and if you are planning some land restoration a good place to start is getting rid of your rabbits !

Spent some time on the Monaro yesterday chasing rabbits. This farm has had issues for some time. The implosions worked really well. The burrows cracked and then caved in after detonation. The soil was great for this job, the weather not so much ! Almost snowed. We also managed to implode some burrows under a fence line without damage to the fence. Several previous attempts with a backhoe had been less successful. With rabbit control it's horses for courses. Different situations require different methods. We also fumigated some steep banks too which worked well.

Last week I attended the Landscape Rehydration Field Day at Bookham. Organised by Sarah at Bookham Bowning Landcare and presented by Erin and Annabelle from the Mulloon Institute. It was a great day, learnt a lot about on farm water management, erosion, pasture management and more. Lots of great people there too who added to the information pool. Thanks to Transgrid for funding this and to Tony who allowed us to look around his property and provided the cows for the cover photo ! Slipped in a sneaky half hour fumigation job at Yass on the way over.

At this rate rabbits are moving fast enough to trigger speed cameras ! It's actually a serious issue. If you own or manage rural land then you should be aware of all your rabbit management options.
