Termites love moisture.

Leaking pipes, poor ventilation, damp areas, and water damage create ideal conditions for termite activity.

Warning signs to watch for:
⚠ Damp walls
⚠ Musty smells
⚠ Bubbling paint
⚠ Soft or damaged timber

These signs may seem minor, but they can indicate a much larger problem hidden beneath the surface.

Looks fine outside. Damage inside.

That’s the problem with termites—they work silently behind walls, under floors, and inside timber structures where you can’t easily see them.

By the time visible damage appears, repairs can already be expensive.

Common hidden risks include:
✔ Termite activity inside walls
✔ Structural timber damage
✔ Moisture-prone areas
✔ Undetected infestations

Before you commit to a property purchase, make sure you know what’s happening beneath the surface.

What Is BASF's ATBS & Why We Recommend It

When it comes to protecting your Gold Coast home from termites, not all baiting systems are created equal. That's why at Gold Coast Pest Inspector, we recommend BASF's Advance Termite Bait System. Better known as ATBS.

So, what is it?

BASF's ATBS uses Trelona Termite Bait, powered by an active ingredient called Novaluron — and it sets a genuine benchmark for termite baiting in the Australian market. Novaluron works by disrupting chitin synthesis, which prevents termites from completing the moulting process. Because colony members moult at different stages, the effect on the colony is progressive — steadily working through the entire nest rather than just the termites that find the bait first.

Active from day one

Unlike older baiting systems that rely on wood monitors, Trelona ATBS comes pre-baited, meaning when termites find the in-ground stations, they start feeding immediately on the highly palatable bait. That's 24/7 protection from the moment it's installed.

Built to last

Each station holds up to 248g of bait across two cartridges, with no water needed during installation. Field trials show that installed cartridges remain effective and palatable for up to 3 years post-installation.

Why we trust it

BASF has been the leader in termite control in Australia since the launch of Termidor back in 2002. That's over two decades of proven results. ATBS is the natural evolution of that expertise, giving us the tools to tailor the right solution for your property.

If you'd like to know whether BASF ATBS is the right fit for your home, give us a call or book an inspection today. 🐜🏠

Here's another one from our Gold Coast Hinterland. This one is from Reedy Creek.

We've got an image on our website of a termite mound in Reedy Creek that's almost as tall as the man standing next to it. Granted, he's not the tallest person in the world but the mound comes up to near his arm pits.

The real threat to Gold Coast homes comes from subterranean termites — particularly Coptotermes species (especially Coptotermes acinaciformis), which are considered one of the most destructive timber pests in the world. They live underground in hidden nests, travel through mud tubes, and are expert at staying concealed while they hollow out structural timbers from the inside. In other words, termites in the termite mounds aren't a big problem. They're just a very big visual reminder of what thrives in our natural habitat. On the other hands, the termites that are problems can do this kind of damage (see image) before you even know it.

These sticks were skirting boards until termites got to them.

This picture was taken in a home in Bonogin in Gold Coast's hinterland. Rural properties can be especially susceptible to termites because the natural conditions for termites are all around. (Richard has seen evidence of termites in almost every home in every suburb across the Gold Coast though. Bonogin might have rural properties but that doesn't mean your Southport property is safe.)
