• Septic Tank: A watertight container made of concrete, fiberglass, or polyethylene. It holds the wastewater long enough to allow solids to settle down to the bottom forming sludge, while the oil and grease float to the top as scum.
• Drainfield (Leach Field): A shallow, covered excavation made in unsaturated soil. Pretreated wastewater is discharged through piping onto porous surfaces that allow wastewater to filter through the soil.

2. The Installation Process
The installation of a septic system involves several critical steps to ensure it functions correctly and complies with local health and environmental standards [1].

Step 1: Assess the Soil and Property (Perc Test)
Before any design or installation can begin, a percolation (perc) test is required. This test measures the soil’s drainage rate and determines if the land is suitable for a septic system. A site survey is also conducted to assess topography, proximity to water bodies, and available space for the drainfield [1].

Step 2: System Design
Based on the perc test results and the size of the household (usually determined by the number of bedrooms), a professional contractor will design the system. This includes selecting the appropriate type of system (conventional, mound, aerobic, etc.), tank size, material, and the exact location on the property [1].

Step 3: Obtain Permits
Before breaking ground, the contractor must obtain the necessary permits from the local municipality or health department. The authorities will review and approve the design plan to ensure it meets all local codes and regulations [1].

Step 4: Site Preparation and Excavation
If replacing an old system, the existing tank must be pumped and decommissioned. For new installations, the contractor will excavate the area, ensuring the base for the tank is level and digging trenches for the pipework [1].

Step 5: Installation
The new septic tank is lowered into the excavated hole. The contractor then installs the necessary pipes connecting the house to the tank and the tank to the drainfield. The drainfield is constructed according to the approved design [1].

Step 6: Inspection

Step 7: Backfilling and Landscaping
Once approved, the contractor covers the system with soil and gravel. It is recommended to plant grass or shallow-rooted ground cover over the area. Deeply rooted trees and plants should be avoided near the system to prevent root intrusion and damage [1].
