BOILER FAILURE

Due to the insulating effect that scale and soot have on a boiler tube, means that the tube-wall temperature can get so hot that the tube itself weakens and can rupture. It goes without saying that more fuel must be used to produce the same amount of heat transfer which increases cost and reduces system reliability and longevity.

NOT ALL METHODS ARE EQUAL

To determine the most effective approach to remove fouling, every facility needs to look at the type of scale occurring in their boiler. Laser ablation is by far the best solution here in Western Australia. Manual cleaning blends defects and removes material from the substrate whereas lasers do not. It only removes the soot and scale from the tube walls and ablates corrosion residue from within the crevices of defects. Laser ablation is designed to decontaminate and restore substrates and that facilitates improved NDT detection of failure mechanisms that can lead to catastrophic failure.

MOST INTERESTING OBJECT RECEIVED TO DATE

Our training group on Monday (September 12) had a chance to experiment with the different laser settings and ablation positions. They also had a variety of interesting objects to play with. We received a hammer which was found buried in soil for an unknown period. There where sections of boiler tube and another heavy duty fl**ge. But, more importantly, new laser absorbing material to test.

THE LASER ABSORBING MATERIAL FAILED MISERABLY

We initially allocated a 6-hour window (09H00 to 15H00) but were done and dusted by 14H30.

Yet another successful inspection performed by Lasmo personnel. Here we are preparing the tube sheet by numbering it with a Xylene free marker to avoid losing position, especially during a nightshift. An example of a reference tube scan as a matter of interest for those wondering what tube inspection is all about.

Typical corrosion on a steel plate but this one has a surprise hidden which becomes visible only after the laser ablation process removed the corrosion from the substrate. Magnetic particle inspection ensued and the crack easily stands out on the white background.

Lasmo cleaned a stainless steel sample that was part of a failed gear system. The fracture/stress lines were contaminated and through laser ablation, a clean substructure was obtained to enable macro images to be taken during failure analyses
