Probation periods are implemented at the start of the employment relationship. They give both the employer and the employee time to work out whether or not the arrangement is working for them.

The probationary period is set by the employer at the commencement of employment. Ideally, the arrangement should be in writing and it should be long enough so that the employer can get a good idea of how the employee has been performing. We think 6 months is an ideal length for a probationary period.
