Humid afternoon, storm rolling in, and suddenly there are winged insects all over the porch light?
There's a good chance they're termite alates, and this is exactly where they come from. These photos are from a recent job of ours: winged alates getting ready to fly, surrounded by the workers and soldiers doing the damage you can see in the skirting and window frame.
Swarming season is well underway across the Gold Coast. On warm, sticky evenings, mature colonies send out alates to try and start new ones.

Most alates drop their wings and die within a short time, so a few drifting across the lawn isn't cause for panic. If you're seeing them coming out of the ground near the house, from walls or garden edging, or finding piles of shed wings around windows and doors, inside or out, that's when we'd want to take a closer look.
What you can do on swarming nights:
💡 Turn off porch lights and any lights you don't need inside
🪟 Close windows, flyscreens, the garage roller door and internal doors
🌙 Draw the blinds and curtains
📸 Snap a photo or pop a few in a jar, and note where they seemed to come from
🌿 Keep mulch, garden beds and stored timber away from the house, and fix leaking taps and drains
