Termites in the house despite the existing termite protection doing its job!

Ant caps are physical metal flashings designed to prevent termites from gaining concealed access into a structure, rather than preventing them from entering altogether.

Much like the termite protection commonly installed in modern homes, ant caps force termites to build an exposed entry path that can be detected during a professional inspection. In this case, the termites have bridged the ant cap by constructing a mud tube up the wire mesh.

It’s a good reminder that no termite management system should be relied upon as a substitute for regular professional termite inspections!

While physical termite systems are a great way to prevent concealed termite entry once termites have reached your home, combining them with a professionally applied chemical treatment or termite monitoring and baiting system can provide a more comprehensive approach to termite management.

This roof timber looked pretty normal at first glance… until it was opened up.

The timber was heavily damaged by termites, but from the outside there wasn’t a lot to give it away. That’s one of the reasons termites can be so destructive—they eat the timber from the inside out, often leaving a thin outer layer intact.

It’s a good reminder that termite inspections are about much more than just having a quick look around. We spend a lot of time checking the areas most people would never think to look, and using the right tools and experience to pick up the subtle signs before they become major damage.

At SA Pest Services, we don’t just solve pest problems – we help prevent them from returning.

Evidence of pest activity can be easy to overlook, but it often plays a vital role in identifying how pests are entering a property and determining the most effective long-term solution.

These photos show:
🐀 Grease marks on roof timbers from repeated rodent traffic.
🐀 Rodent droppings throughout the roof space.
🐀 Food carried into the roof cavity, indicating an established nesting area.

At this property, we carried out an initial rodent baiting program to eliminate the existing population. Once activity had ceased, we installed mesh proofing over several rodent entry points and recommended trimming back overhanging tree branches that were providing easy access onto the roof.

By combining eradication, proofing and practical advice, we help provide a more complete, long-term solution rather than simply treating the symptoms.

Think termite damage is always easy to spot? Sometimes it can be, but other times it can be much more discreet!

📸 #1 Subfloor support stump that has suffered extensive damage from an active termite infestation.

📸 #2 Large mud lead built by termites to travel safely between the soil and the timber.

📸 #3 Small mud lead that could easily be overlooked during a quick look under the house.

You may also notice the metal ant caps fitted to the stumps in the first two photos. While ant caps were once commonly installed as part of termite management systems, they do not provide complete protection on their own. Termites can bypass or bridge these barriers, making regular termite inspections just as important today as they were when these homes were built.

By the time termites become obvious, they may have already caused significant structural damage. Annual termite inspections are one of the best ways to detect termite activity early and help protect your home.
