Artist announcement: Coloured Stone.
An Aboriginal Australian band whose members originate from the Koonibba Mission, South Australia. They first became known for their 1984 single, "Black Boy". The band performs using guitar, bass, drums, and Aboriginal instruments – didjeridu, bundawuthada (gong stone) and clap sticks – to play traditional music.
Come see them live at the 2026 Yidiyi Festival (October 16 & 17)

We’ve noticed a lot of people are still learning about the words and terminology connected to Aboriginal people and culture.

So we’ve put together this simple definition series to help clear up some confusion and support better understanding.

Like all of our posts, we’re happy for this to be part of a respectful conversation. We welcome feedback, different views, and extra knowledge people want to share.

"Sovereign"

Sovereign speaks to the continuing authority and inherent rights of Aboriginal peoples as the original peoples of this land.

It is a powerful word and one that people should take time to understand properly.

We’re now in Dum and Bundjil time! 🌼

The Dja Dja Wurrung Indigenous seasonal calendar recognises distinct weather periods that occur across the year. From September until mid-November, the weather warms up, but frost and rainy days can still be common.

As the water warms, Watjarang (Platypus) along Campbells Creek breed and lay eggs, while River Blackfish become more active and begin to spawn.

This is also peak flowering season, with Murna (Yam Daisy), Gitjawil Matom (Chocolate Lily) and Bam (Bulbine Lily) among the wildflowers brightening up the bush.

Listen out for frog choruses along creeks and rivers, Australian Reed-Warblers calling in the reeds and Rainbow Bee-Eeaters returning from northern Australia. 🌿🐸
