If you have heavy clay soil around your yard, throwing a lot of water at it all at once will just cause it to pool on top and run off into the gutters💧

Because clay absorbs water very slowly, traditional long watering cycles don't give the moisture enough time to actually sink down to the roots. A much better approach is called "cycle and soak" - programming your controller to run for multiple short bursts with an hour break in between. This gives the stubborn clay time to actually absorb the water, keeping your garden healthier while reducing your water bill.

Many people set their irrigation timers for the evening so they don’t lose water to the midday sun, but this can actually trigger fungal diseases in your grass. When you water at night, the droplets sit on the blades for hours without evaporating, creating a damp environment where mold thrives.
