Theres thousands if not millions of these flying tonight in Dalyellup all looking for a mate and a place to build a home, have kids and then start to feed the family…. Their not ants….

These are the new kings and queen termites, Alates, they pair up, mate and reproduce, build a nest and go one the lookout for food, they devour cellulose which is contained in wood, and wood products, including the Timbers in your home.

Check when your home was last treated against termites, have a look for a label inside the meter box. If it was 5 years or more its time to consider a retreat….

We have had a huge increase in calls from clients that have heard noises in the roof thinking they may have Possums, in most cases it turns out to be Rats, Ratus Ratus (the Roof Rat or Bush Rat) or the imported larger Ratus Norvegicus (the Water Rat or Sewer Rat)….

Both will nest in your roof space or anywhere they can get warmth this time of year, they might even get into your living areas looking for food or water.

They transmit disease, they breed like mad and their urine and faeces leave Staines in your ceiling and smell terrible. Rats have to gnaw to keep their incisor teeth short, and will gnaw on your timber, concrete, bricks, water pipes and electrical cables which can cause thousands of dollars in water damage or fire damage.

If you hear noises at night you may not have lost your mind, you may have a rodent issue up in the roof.

While completing a termite treatment at a home in Dalyellup recently the owner asked about rodents as they were having trouble with mice in the garage. So we placed tamperproof rodent bait stations in the garage, a large one for rats and mice near the garage door and a smaller one for mice near the back door of the garage. As the temperature drops rodents and other pests will be looking for shelter, warmth and food. Tell your rodents and other pests to nick off….

I got a call from a neighbour, a little panicked, so I went around to see what was bothering him.

After noticing some “mud” on his wine barrel he pulled the b**g out to have a look. You can imagine his horror to find termites had eaten most of the Oak barrels out and made a good start on the Jarrah slab above them. The termites had come up thru the pavers into the barrels less than 3 meters from the house. We gave them a treat and told them to nick off.

The home itself had not been treated since it was built some 11 years ago so we also did a full timber inspection of the home and installed a perimeter treatment using Termidor.

With small increases in temperature and the warmer days to go on longer insects will be more active for longer… So, please check your meter box for a sticker that should have the name of the company, the date and products used, if it was more than five years ago you might want to consider an inspection and / or a treatment to prevent termite attack. Many people think these flying insects are flying ants but they are termite Alates, flying off to start new colonies, they pair up, land, lose their wings and start digging and multiplying. It takes around three years for a colony to become established, but once established they can cause serious structural damage to your home in just three months. If you see them flying then there's already a termite nest near you.

Just imagine the damage termites could do to your property.
This was only a small termite colony, the termites were eating the veranda posts. We told them to nick off before they got into the house and caused major structural damage that could have run into tens of thousands of dollars to repair. We advise regular termite / timber pest inspections.
