“My son, Sonny, had always been full of beans. But at 22 months, he lost all his energy and appetite. The doctors we initially saw locally said it was a viral infection and nothing to worry about. Then he began to sleep a lot longer than usual. My maternal instinct kicked in and I just knew that something was very wrong.”
Unfortunately, Petrea’s instinct was proved right. But nothing could have prepared her for what happened next. When they arrived at their local medical centre, the GP took one look at Sonny’s pale, limp body and he was transferred immediately to Dalby Hospital. There it was confirmed he had leukeamia.
⏰ Sonny needed chemotherapy urgently, but it had to be the right type for his specific blood cancer—and this could only be confirmed by haematology and oncology specialists that they didn’t have at the hospital in Dalby. The closest hospital that could help was in Brisbane - at least three hours away by car. And to make matters more complicated, it was essential that Sonny’s blood transfusions were continued to keep his condition stable.
It was a mission for RACQ LifeFlight Rescue. 🚁
The crew was dispatched from the Toowoomba base to transfer Sonny to the more specialised hospital in Brisbane. Onboard was a comprehensively trained crew carrying a range of lifesaving equipment, ready to keep Sonny stable across his transfer.
To keep our crews prepared for mission’s like Sonny’s across the busy Christmas period, we need your support to help cover the cost of equipment and training. By donating today, you will be providing an invaluable Christmas gift of vital aeromedical care to Queenslanders: https://bit.ly/3kpjRqp
