Well, Captain Midnight has just wrapped up another fantastic week of barra fishing at the Batman Invitational aboard the Iron Lady, fishing the pristine waters of East Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory.
Despite catching an incredible number of barra throughout the week, the records remained intact this year and nobody managed to topple the benchmark fish. That said, the trip wasn't without its highlights.
I was presented with my trophy for last year's biggest barra, a catch that saw me join the Metery Club not once, but twice. The first fish measured exactly 100 centimetres, while the second stretched the tape to an impressive 117 centimetres and holds the record for biggest barra in the comps history.
As always, the fishing was only part of the experience. It was fantastic to catch up with the crew aboard the Iron Lady and spend another week sharing stories, laughs and good company with a great group of fellow anglers. Events like this are something special, and I'm very grateful to have been involved for the last few years.
The fish may have won this year's battle for the record books, but they certainly didn't stop us from having another memorable week in one of Australia's most spectacular fishing destinations.

50% of your life is engulfed in darkness. Don’t let that darkness stop you from cruising your boat and enjoying all the hours in your day.

Captain Midnight wants to help you become comfortable with the darkness.

Night navigation is a skill, not magic. Like anything on the water, confidence comes from understanding, preparation, and experience.

Reach out to us anytime if you’d like to learn more about operating your vessel at night and let us share some of the experience we’ve gained over many thousands of offshore miles.

Docking your boat shouldn’t be stressful.

There is no prize for getting back into the marina quickly. No matter how fast you do it, nobody is handing out medals at the fuel dock.

You should only manoeuvre as quickly as you are prepared to crash.

Take all the time you need when space is available. One of the best things you can do is orientate your boat on the same heading as your berth while you’re still out in open water. Sit there for a moment and feel what the wind and current are doing to the vessel before you try the same thing in a tight marina.

When in doubt, back out, compose yourself, and have another go.

There is no dishonour in needing another attempt. I often need a couple of goes myself, and I’ve been doing this a long time.
