60 Years of History, Rust and Old Coatings – 1963 Studebaker

There's something satisfying about uncovering the original steel on a vehicle that's been around for more than six decades.

This 1963 Studebaker is undergoing extensive restoration, and we had the opportunity to tackle part of its heavily weathered front chassis assembly.

Years of rust, corrosion, deteriorating paint and accumulated grime had left the front crossmember looking fairly tired and looking worse it actually is .

With the help of laser cleaning technology, we were able to strip back selected sections, removing surface rust and old coatings to reveal the original steel beneath.

Fact, i actually use 2 laser technology’s for the work i do .

The before-and-after photos give a good indication of the results, particularly around the pressed steel sections and curved surfaces of the crossmember.

One of the benefits of laser cleaning is its ability to work on complex components without abrasive blasting media, harsh chemicals or water, making it a useful option for classic vehicle restoration.

With older vehicles like this, preserving original components wherever possible is an important part of the restoration process.

I had a special helper for this job, my daughter Sophie who joined me for part of the restoration process .

Classic Holden fuel tank Brought Back to Life!

Today we are restoring a fuel tank from a VK Holden Commodore, getting some attention from Dowell's Laser Cleaning pulse laser machine .

After around 40 years of service, the tank had accumulated its fair share of old coatings, surface rust, oil and grime.

Using laser cleaning technology, we were able to strip back years of buildup, revealing the original galvanised coating where it remained intact, while removing surface rust from areas where the underlying steel had been exposed.

One of the great advantages of laser cleaning is the ability to selectively remove unwanted surface material without abrasive blasting media, harsh chemicals or water, while retaining existing coatings where appropriate.

It's a great option for restoring older automotive components, particularly when replacement parts are becoming harder to find.

This tank required some new galvanised paint work but mostly retained most of its factory coating.

Bringing an old tractor components back to life!

Another great result from Dowell's Laser Cleaning colac !

This latest project involved cleaning the centre section of an old tractor wheel rim, removing years of deteriorated paint, surface rust and corrosion to bring the metal back to a much cleaner condition.

As you can see from the before-and-after photos, the wheel centre had considerable surface corrosion and several layers of old paint that needed removing.

Using our laser cleaning technology, we were able to strip away the unwanted coatings and corrosion while preserving the original shape and detail of the component.

One of the advantages of laser cleaning is its ability to work across curved surfaces, recessed areas and around mounting holes without the need for abrasive blasting media.

The finished result is a clean metal surface, ready for the next stage of restoration and refinishing.

It's always satisfying seeing an old piece of machinery cleaned up and given a new lease on life, especially when the difference is this noticeable!

Continuous Wave (CW) laser cleaning system.

The aim was to evaluate how effectively the laser could remove mould, algae and organic staining from concrete without the use of chemicals or high-pressure water.
The cleaned sections clearly show the laser's ability to strip away years of surface contamination, revealing the original concrete beneath.

🔹 Precision cleaning only where required
🔹 Ideal for testing different cleaning speeds and settings
These photos show test sections only—the entire driveway has not been cleaned. The contrasting areas highlight the difference between the untreated surface and the laser-cleaned sections.
We're continuing to develop laser cleaning techniques across a wide range of materials and applications, with every test helping refine the process.

Over the weekend I put some time into tuning a setting for stripping paint from fibreglass body work without damaging the gel coat or fibreglass part .
I was stripping a fibreglass hood scoop which had black paint and clear coat .
The scoop had a damaged spot before I began the laser stripping process but no further damage was caused or uncovered on the top surface.
The pulse laser removed all paint leaving the surface ready for a sand then and prime .
