NEVER handle wild snakes without the appropriate training, experience and licensing to do so, I do not encourage the handling of snakes by untrained individuals or encourage freehandling of venomous snakes, I do this only to show you the beauty of these creatures and teach you that they are not what you think they are and don’t want to bite for no reason, only when they feel threatened! Please never handle wild snakes yourself and leave it to the trained and licenced professionals! Here is a beautiful Red Bellied Black Snake (Pseudechis porphyriacus) I recently relocated from an obstacle course right where the children were playing at the Great Aussie Bush Camp in Morisset, although the camp instructors know there are snakes living around the camp and the kids know to leave them alone, this girl was hanging around a little to close for comfort to the area and courses being used that day, you can see her body condition how she’s quite thin and deflated at the back end, this tells me she is a female that has recently given birth to a litter of babies and now needs a good feed to put some weight back on before winter, I released her at a nice creek area in the bush nearby with plenty of frogs and lizards around for her to eat, what a beautiful snake, good luck out there mumma hopefully she finds a few good feeds and gets back to a healthy weight before winter! Here’s a cute little Marsh Snake (Hemiaspis signata) I relocated from a backyard in Balcolyn a few weeks ago, nice healthy snake that was mistaken for a brown, common mistake but always better to be safe than sorry and call the professionals! These guys are a very common small elapid species in our area, and can be identified by the two white or yellow stripes along their face, they can also be active both during the day and at night depending on the weather, they’re only considered mildly venomous but can still cause pain and swelling and even worse symptoms if you happen to be hypersensitive or allergic to venom so never handle them or any wild snakes yourself!

Here’s a quick catch and release video of the Common Tree Snake (Dendrelaphis punctulata) from a bathroom in Adamstown Heights recently, on entering the bathroom I first started looking behind things on shelves and the floor then looked up to see him sitting on the towel rail watching me, after I caught him I had to stop filming to use two hands to hold him properly and get him into the bag, absolutely love the colours on these guys, such a stunning species of snake and watch how quickly he disappears in the grass when I let him go, amazing!

Warning! Never attempt to handle or interfere with wild snakes of any kind without the relevant training and experience! I do not encourage anyone to freehandle venomous snakes, you should not be handling them in any way, play it safe and leave it to the professionals! The aim of my posts is to show you another side of snakes you won’t often see, they are not out to bite you and if they don’t feel threatened have no reason to! Let’s change our attitude to these beautiful creatures we share our home with and learn to co exist with them! Yet another Red Bellied Black Snake (Pseudechis porphyriacus), this one was inside a family’s garage at Catherine Hill Bay recently, luckily the homeowner saw where it went and did an amazing job watching until I arrived making for a nice and easy catch only having to move one cabinet instead of having to dig through the whole garage like we often do, nice and easy catch and relocation back down to the local bush where he belongs!

Warning - Never attempt to handle wild snakes unless you’re a trained professional, it takes a lot of experience and knowledge of snake behaviour to do this and should never be attempted! Here’s another nice Red Bellied Black Snake (Pseudechis porphyriacus) this one I relocated from under a tarp in someone’s front yard in Cessnock recently, the homeowner had lifted the tarp while cleaning up the yard, and did the smart thing putting the tarp slowly back down and backing away to give me a call while keeping a close eye on the area, this meant the snake could sense people were still close by so decided the best option was to stay under the tarp and keep hiding until the coast is clear which made for a nice easy catch and a safe relocation down to the local reserve not far away! Red Bellied Black Snakes are dangerously venomous and should never be handled or provoked, I never encourage anyone to handle snakes or wildlife of any kind without the appropriate training and licensing, I am simply trying to show you through my photos that snakes are not mindless evil creatures that just want to bite, they simply want to be left alone and go about their buisness, and have no intention of biting unless they feel threatened! If you see one, give it space and it will likely move on of its own accord, otherwise call a professional never deal with it yourself!

Here’s a beautiful Common Tree Snake (Dendrelaphis punctulata) I relocated from a bathroom in Adamstown Heights recently, he got in through an open window in the laundry, and one of the people living there almost had a shower with it before he noticed and got quite the shock! Luckily they did a great job closing the bathroom door and putting a towel under it until I arrived, when I opened the door there he was sitting up high on the towel rail!

Here’s a quick little release video and bit of info on the juvenile Red Bellied Black Snake (Pseudechis porphyriacus) I relocated from a bedroom in Cardiff a few days ago, only fresh born, this is the time of year all the eggs are hatching or snakes are giving birth, will be lots of babies around soon! Did you know only 10% of baby snakes actually survive to adulthood? Most end up becoming food for something else, all part of the food chain, good luck out there in the big wide world little buddy! Just to make things clear I am not encourage or promoting handling of venomous snakes whatsoever, no one should be handling wild snakes in any way unless you’re a trained and licensed professional! I have been working with snakes all my life and take calculated risks and understand their body language and behaviour, DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME! If you see a snake, leave it alone and call the professionals, I’m only trying to show you that snakes are not evil creatures out to bite you, they just want to be left alone and if you are calm and respectful of them, they won’t bite you! It’s baby season! A few nights ago I was called to a Retirement Village in Cardiff where a lady had seen this juvenile Red Bellied Black Snake (Pseudechis porphyriacus) going into her bedroom which is definitely not an ideal place for a venomous snake! Luckily after moving around the furniture and bed I was able to find the little guy hiding under a corner of her bed and I was able to safely relocate him back to a nice spot of local bush away from the retirement village! It’s that time of year now when most of the baby snakes have been born or hatched, so always be aware and keep your eye out especially while gardening or in bushy areas, as even though they are only small they’re still highly venomous, although it’s a complete myth that babies are more dangerous than adults this is not true at all, juvenile snakes have just as much control over their venom output and can still dry bite like adults can, they also have much smaller venom glands and therefore a smaller venom yield than adult snakes and also much shorter fangs, but they are still dangerously venomous and can still cause a nasty bite and make you very sick or even worse because everyone has a different reaction to venom, so don’t risk it and call the professionals!

Here’s the beautiful Diamond Intergrade Carpet Python from Finn Poke on Main Street of Newcastle last night, as you can see from the first photo taken by staff he had been sitting along the windowsill all day and was still there into the night without moving on they decided to give me a call, poor guy was probably to scared to move with all the people around underneath him in the busy street so luckily I was able to get him safely back to a bit of a better spot, the city isn’t the most ideal place for a snake but I was able to find a nice patch of bushland near one of the beaches nearby which is probably where he came from in the first place!

This beautiful young Red Bellied Black Snake (Pseudechis porphyriacus) I relocated from inside a shop warehouse at the Hunter Correctional Facility recently, the warehouse workers saw it duck under a pallet and did a great job blocking off the area and keeping an eye on it so it couldn’t go too far until I got there making for a nice easy catch without having to search the whole warehouse which is always nice! Nice healthy yearling red belly and was released in the bush not to far away to live out his days in peace away from the dangers of people and pets! Red Bellied Black Snakes are dangerously venomous and should never be handled or provoked!
