Here’s a beautiful healthy Red Bellied Black Snake (Pseudechis porphyriacus) from back in late February when snake season was in full force, was catching multiple red belly’s pretty much every day during peak summer, a lot quieter now it’s winter and snakes are in brumation, however they are still active in good conditions and now is a great time to get a yard or roof inspection done when they might be hunkering down, this very healthy specimen was caught at Morisset Public School, it had been wandering around the grounds in the morning and luckily one of the teachers did a great job keeping at eye on it and watched it go into a supply closet making for a nice and easy catch when I got there and the red belly was moved safely out of harms way back to the bush away from kids!
Red Bellied Black snakes are dangerously venomous and should never be handled or provoked, do not attempt to handle or interfere with any wild snakes without the appropriate training and experience!

How gorgeous is this beautiful Golden Crowned Snake (Cacophis squamulosus) I relocated from the basement of a warehouse in Cooranbong back in February, the staff got quite the shock and thought it was a young red belly, but was just this weakly venomous and very reluctant to bite golden crown, a small nocturnal elapid species quite common in our area and often mistaken for red belly’s and browns, these guys put on a show but almost never bite and are not dangerous at all, they can be told apart by the distinct “crown” marking around the head trail g down the neck! They mainly feed on sleeping lizards and frogs which they hunt by dark, often leading to them being trapped in pools!

Another catch up post from back in February, been very slack with posting sorry! This juvenile Red Bellied Black Snake (Pseudechis porphyriacus) was found inside a warehouse in Mandalong by some workers and not knowing when I’d be able to arrive, they put a protein powder container in front of it and the little guy went right in, luckily everyone was safe and it ended well however it’s not usually recommended as it’s easy to make a mistake and end up either scaring it away somewhere you can’t access, hurting the snake or getting bitten trying to catch it, did you know the leading cause of snake bite in Australia is people trying to catch or kill the snake? Luckily these workers did it the safest way they could have and nothing went wrong but that’s not always the case, if it’s inside the best thing to do is just keep a close eye on it from a safe distance until a snake catcher arrives! This young red belly was a bit dusty with protein powder after his ordeal so I gave him a rinse off and drink under fresh water and released him later that evening, as juvenile fresh born red belly’s are often mainly nocturnal especially in summer, it’s a lot easier for such a small snake to hide from predators and hunt during the night! Always remember to never handle wild snakes on your own without professional training and experience and the relevant licensing, just call the professionals!

Here’s a beautiful healthy Red Bellied Black Snake (Pseudechis porphyriacus) I relocated from out front of a work shed in Cooranbong back in February, this guy was sneaky and actually took me 3 visits to catch as every time I’d get there he had already disappeared down a hole in the garden that connected to opening underneath the concrete slab the shed was on, luckily on the 3rd time I was able to catch him just in time before he disappeared and then safely relocated him down to the local wetlands just down the road where he will have much better habitat and plenty of frogs to eat! Although snakes are slowing down at this time of year, they will still be active on warm sunny days, and are also looking for good shelter sites to hide away and brumate for winter, so it’s the perfect time of year to book in a property inspection where we can come out and check all the hiding spots and areas of concern in your yard or roof, and give you tips on how to make your property less attractive to snakes!

Here’s a quick clip of a beautiful young Brushtail Possum being released back into his backyard trees after accidentally being trapped inside a roof of a home for a few days at Tuggerah Lakes, luckily the family heard him and realised he was trapped inside the roof and I was able to come and safely trap him and release back outside at night before he went too long without food and water!

Sorry for the social media absence lately, was away for a while then busy and just not bothered posting but will try get some of the snake catches from recent months up soon, still be getting calls for a few snakes a week as the season slows down and possum jobs have started to increase again, here’s a beautiful young male Common Brushtail Possum I removed from a roof he had been trapped inside for a few days after it got sealed up, so was more than happy to go into the trap for a nice feed of banana and then was released into the backyard and some nice trees on the back of the same property, now it’s coming into winter you might hear more possum activity as they spend more time hunkered down inside the roof in this yucky and cold weather! It is illegal and can be very bad for the possum if they are caught without having a licence and cannot be taken away from their small home range, so if you have a possum problem do the right thing and give us a call!

NEVER handle wild snakes without the appropriate training, experience and licensing to do so, I do not encourage the handling of snakes by untrained individuals or encourage freehandling of venomous snakes, I do this only to show you the beauty of these creatures and teach you that they are not what you think they are and don’t want to bite for no reason, only when they feel threatened! Please never handle wild snakes yourself and leave it to the trained and licenced professionals! Here is a beautiful Red Bellied Black Snake (Pseudechis porphyriacus) I recently relocated from an obstacle course right where the children were playing at the Great Aussie Bush Camp in Morisset, although the camp instructors know there are snakes living around the camp and the kids know to leave them alone, this girl was hanging around a little to close for comfort to the area and courses being used that day, you can see her body condition how she’s quite thin and deflated at the back end, this tells me she is a female that has recently given birth to a litter of babies and now needs a good feed to put some weight back on before winter, I released her at a nice creek area in the bush nearby with plenty of frogs and lizards around for her to eat, what a beautiful snake, good luck out there mumma hopefully she finds a few good feeds and gets back to a healthy weight before winter! Here’s a cute little Marsh Snake (Hemiaspis signata) I relocated from a backyard in Balcolyn a few weeks ago, nice healthy snake that was mistaken for a brown, common mistake but always better to be safe than sorry and call the professionals! These guys are a very common small elapid species in our area, and can be identified by the two white or yellow stripes along their face, they can also be active both during the day and at night depending on the weather, they’re only considered mildly venomous but can still cause pain and swelling and even worse symptoms if you happen to be hypersensitive or allergic to venom so never handle them or any wild snakes yourself!

Here’s a quick catch and release video of the Common Tree Snake (Dendrelaphis punctulata) from a bathroom in Adamstown Heights recently, on entering the bathroom I first started looking behind things on shelves and the floor then looked up to see him sitting on the towel rail watching me, after I caught him I had to stop filming to use two hands to hold him properly and get him into the bag, absolutely love the colours on these guys, such a stunning species of snake and watch how quickly he disappears in the grass when I let him go, amazing!

I do not encourage anyone to freehandle venomous snakes, you should not be handling them in any way, play it safe and leave it to the professionals! The aim of my posts is to show you another side of snakes you won’t often see, they are not out to bite you and if they don’t feel threatened have no reason to! Let’s change our attitude to these beautiful creatures we share our home with and learn to co exist with them! Yet another Red Bellied Black Snake (Pseudechis porphyriacus), this one was inside a family’s garage at Catherine Hill Bay recently, luckily the homeowner saw where it went and did an amazing job watching until I arrived making for a nice and easy catch only having to move one cabinet instead of having to dig through the whole garage like we often do, nice and easy catch and relocation back down to the local bush where he belongs!
