ACT FI****MS LICENCE HOLDERS – THE PROPOSED NEW LAWS HAVE NOT PASSED YET! NOW IS THE TIME TO ACT.

SSAA National CEO Tom Kenyon has released an important November 2026 update on the ACT’s proposed fi****ms laws.

The Fi****ms (Public Safety) Amendment Bill 2026 is still before the ACT Legislative Assembly. It has NOT been passed.

The update explains the current situation and outlines how ACT fi****ms licence holders can have their concerns heard.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

1. Visit the ACT Electoral Commission website to find your electorate and your five MLAs.

2. Contact your local MLAs by email or letter to share your views on the proposed legislation.

3. Consider the issues discussed in the SSAA update, including the proposed fi***rm caps, public safety and the relationship between ACT and NSW legislation.

4. Consider making contact in early November, ahead of the busy end-of-year parliamentary period.

5. You can also phone your MLA’s office or request a meeting. Keep all communication polite, constructive and respectful.

We encourage everyone affected by the proposed changes to listen to Tom Kenyon’s update, understand what is being proposed and stay informed as the Bill progresses.

Scientists are aware that the current strains of calicivirus are losing their effectiveness as wild rabbit control tools. They also acknowledge we might be several years away from a new more effective strain of the virus becoming widely available for public use. More and more wild rabbits across Australia are developing a natural immunity to biological controls.

In the meantime, very few rabbits (ie none) have an immunity to a .22 bullet to the brain. Shooting is also far more humane than biological warfare and various toxic poisons such as 1080 and Pindone. Shooting is quicker and causes less agony and torture than many other methods.

Don’t let Beatrix Potter’s delightful tales of Peter, Flopsy, Mopsy and Cotton-tail deceive you, rabbits have become one of Australia’s most widespread and damaging invasive species.

Since being introduced to Australia in 1859 by pastoralist Thomas Austin, who thought they’d do “little harm”, rabbits have multiplied rapidly and caused destruction in their wake.

Today, rabbit populations are estimated at around 200 million, vastly lower than a century ago due to the introduction of biocontrols, such as the Myxoma virus and Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease Virus.

While rabbit viruses work very well for a time, rabbits overtime develop resistance to viruses.

Our scientists are developing a new way of growing the rabbit virus, calicivirus, in the lab to speed up selection of new variants with potential to boost control.

We're also tracking virus strains circulating in Australia to map the activity of the various rabbit biocontrol viruses and have begun investigating longer-term solutions such as genetic biocontrol (commonly known as gene drives).
