Some funerals you leave. Some follow you home.

Today followed me home.

As a mum of two boys, standing in front of a family saying goodbye to their son felt particularly heavy.

No wisdom. No life lesson. Just a reminder that life can be incredibly unfair sometimes.

Thinking of BMJ’s family tonight. 💙

I got a lovely message from a family this week thanking me for the service I conducted for their mum.
And while it’s always nice to hear people thought I did a good job, that’s actually not the part that sticks with me.
There can be a lot of pressure around funerals. People often worry about getting everything right. But in my experience, the most meaningful farewells aren’t perfect.
It’s a strange job sometimes. I often meet families on one of the hardest weeks of their lives. Navigating grief, sadness, family dynamics. But being trusted with those moments is something I’ll never take lightly.
So if you’ve ever trusted me to tell the story of someone you love, thank you. It means more than you probably realise. ❤️

Funeral fact:

Nobody at a funeral is sitting there marking a eulogy out of ten.
Yet families put themselves under enormous pressure to write the perfect tribute.

The reality?
Your best friend is sitting in the third row trying not to laugh because they know what really happened on that camping trip.
Your sister is remembering the version of Mum that nobody else saw.
And your brother is wondering if now is an appropriate time to mention the incident with the lawn mower.

The best eulogies aren’t perfect.
They’re human.
And, that’s enough. 🫶🏼

One of the most moving parts of today’s burial service for EJG was the hand lowering and hand backfilling.

For many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families, these moments hold deep cultural and spiritual significance.

To physically lower a loved one, or place the first handfuls of earth back onto the grave, is more than ritual. It is connection. Responsibility. Love. It is family and community walking with that person right to the very end of their earthly journey.
At peace now EJG 🙏🏻

Long-term illness changes everyone around it.
Not just the person diagnosed, but the partner beside them, the children, the friends, the community quietly holding things together in the background for years.

There’s something incredibly hard about loving someone while also knowing, somewhere deep down, that one day you’ll have to let them go.

And when death finally comes after a long illness, grief can look different.
Because alongside the heartbreak can also be relief that the suffering has ended. Relief that everybody can finally exhale. And that can bring its own kind of guilt too.

I already had plans to attend a local MND event here in our community at Yorkeys, but I think it will hit a little differently this year. 🤍

Some days in this work stay with you a little longer.

Today was one of them.

A room full of heartbreak, love, confusion, memories, tears… and people simply trying to make sense of losing someone they loved far too soon.

There are no perfect words in services like this.
Just honesty, gentleness and holding space the best we can.

Very grateful to stand beside people like Sophie and all of the staff from Community Funerals on the hard days. 🤍

And if today reminded us of anything, it’s this… life really is short.
Check in on your people. Sit a little longer. Say the words. Love loudly. 🫶🏼

Today, alongside Christine of , I had the privilege of standing alongside a family as they said goodbye to their beautiful Susanne.

A woman remembered for her creativity, her music, her warmth, her adventurous spirit, and the deep love she carried for her family.

Some lives leave quiet imprints.
Others leave colour, music, memories and pieces of themselves woven through the hearts of the people who loved them.

Susanne was without a doubt, one of those people. Taken far too soon, and remembered far beyond today.

Thinking of all who loved her as they begin navigating life without her beside them. 🤍

Today we honoured and celebrated the life of Courtney.

And honestly… there really will never be another one like her.

27, Loud, vibrant, fiercely loving, deeply human and completely herself. The kind of person who left an imprint absolutely everywhere she went.

Today held heartbreak, laughter, tears, stories, music and moments that felt so undeniably her.

A reminder that funerals do not need to be perfect or polished to be meaningful. Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is simply tell the truth about somebody’s life, love them loudly in return, and make space for both grief and laughter to exist together. Everyone was invited to write a message in her coffin to take with her on her final journey.

Thank you to Courtney’s family for trusting me to help tell her story.

Forever remembered. 🤍

Today we celebrated the life of Ian Franklin. 🤍

A loving husband of 68 years, proud family man, skilled fixer, storyteller, and affectionately known as “Mr Have a Chat” because he could talk to absolutely anyone.

A life full of love, conversation, independence, family, and the simple moments that mattered most.

Rest peacefully Ian, reunited with Kenny. 🤍

Sometimes the most meaningful messages are the simplest.
Behind those few words is love, loss, trust…and a farewell that mattered.
